What is everyone reading in May?

I got a copy of a book called Devil’s Knot about the West Memphis 3 from Thriftbooks and it is SHOCKING how they got actual death sentences and life sentences for these boys on basically ZERO evidence. Not even the flimsiest of the most circumstantial evidence at all- like NO evidence.

I started listening to "The Idea of You" yesterday. Haven't finished it yet.
It is about a 39 year old divorced woman who has an affair with the 20 year old lead singer of a boy band. She meets him when she takes her 12 year old daughter and two of the daughter's friends to a concert to see the band.
It is deliciously dirty. Oh my. Oh my.
I picked it to read because I saw that they are making a movie about it, and it was available on Libby, so I decided to check it out.

I listened to "The Idea of You" per this review and others. It was more salacious than I expected (listen with airpods). I finished it in three days. It felt like a guilty pleasure. It is one of the most satisfying women's lit books that I've read recently. I'm afraid to watch the movie because I don't like the changes I've read about.

I didn’t read the book and didn’t watch the movie. But I think you might enjoy this Moth Talk

Just finished The Bee Sting. Didn’t care for it and it was way too long. I skimmed the last 1/3 or so.

I have the Kindle ebook on hold from FCPL and my delivery is estimated in “several months” Lol.

Just finished the audiobook The Nature of Fragile Things by Susan Meissner from the library/Libby. I've been getting into audiobooks and it was an Audie Award nominee that also had good reviews on Amazon.

It's about a woman from Ireland who is a mail order bride for a man in San Francisco by way of New York. It turns out that everyone has secrets but she is able to create and sustain a chosen family from the wreckage. I liked the first half but got impatient with the second half as it seemed more predictable and the last big reveal was not surprising at all.

I am the other person who posted that I read this book this month. I agree with you. I am in no hurry to watch the movie. I want the details of the book to bounce around in my head for a while first.

The School for Good Mothers

What is it about?

Depending on your POV it's about a woman who leaves her child alone and is then sent to a parenting rehabilitation program or it's about the state using child safety as an excuse to overreach into citizen's lives. All of it tinged with and underlying sexism/misogyny.

What do you think of it?

Remains to be seen. I find myself frustrated with the main character.

Why did you pick that particular book to read?

It's been on my list. I like near future dystopia.

How did you acquire the book?

Library

I read this in April.

I liked it overall even though I didn't love the main character like you. She definitely did some infuriating things! It was interesting enough that I'm not sorry I read it but I also wouldn't recommend it to anyone. So 3/5.

Have you watched the series?

I am finishing Tom Lake, which I am reading because I went to a lunch where Ann Patchett was the guest and copies of the book were the gift. Really enjoying the book.

Next up is First Lie Wins, which is my neighborhood book club pick for June.

Halfway through The Song of Achilles - so far so good.

I enjoyed it during last summer vacation. This summer Circe is on my vacation read list.

The length determines how long you will live. Some people want to open the box, others don’t want to know their fate. Will society treat the short stringers differently?

Goodreads gave this book 4 stars and I agree.

This sounds good.

I OP for School for Good Mothers. It was a DNF for me. I got about a quarter of the way in, at the point where she is going to the school and there was so much left, and I just felt tired of the entire thing already, so I skimmed to the end, which was all right. Slightly predictable.

I feel like this should have been a novella. The message was not at all subtle and I didn't think it required a full novel length treatment. I also had trouble with the near future setting. It was just too hard to buy that this system would have been set in place in our current society.

Its fantastic. I was worried it might not be after having loved Brooklyn so much. But it's great. It will win awards.

Waiting for this one from the library and looking forward to it. I loved Brooklyn! It had a slow start but then picked up and was such a satisfting read. I'm interested to see what happens to the characters.

I just finished Long Island and loved it as well! Presumably he is doing a sequel. I just hope it doesn’t take as long.

About to start James, Huck Finn through the eyes of Jim.
