Big 3, Big 5??

It isn’t. Get over yourself.

Sorry, but NCS seems to have dropped a bit. It's still a great school, but I would not put in in the same category as STA. GDS has developed a very strong reputation among the DC liberal movers-and-shakers in the last decade. I have no dog in this race, this is just what I am hearing among the neighborhood moms and dads in CCDC.

LOL. "Created decades ago"? Big 3 was created on DCUM to copy MoCo's W

Private schools have no interest in copying public schools. Private schools are an escape from public schools…for those that can afford it.

Please lighten up.

OMG such a "DC flex" You people crack me up - making statements like this that have you feeling so important/special - but not having your intended effect. At All. But I'm sure it works in the circles you mingle in.

As someone who came of age in DC in the last 20 years, I can assure you that the kids don't think about it nearly as much as the parents on this board do. Reputations go up and down. For example, STA was on the sh*t list for a long time because they dared to discipline the son of its most famous alumnus — Al Gore, who was VP at the time — when he was caught smoking pot. GDS used to be thought of as an alternative, grungy school, but the Peter Branch years made it more mainstream. Bullis and SAES weren't even in the conversation.

Point is, you really shouldn't make decisions based on these arbitrary designations. Just focus on finding a school that suits your kid, and the rest will work out from there.

I've been here longer. Back in the day a few of the private schools that are very desirable now were viewed as little more than reform schools. Times change. The Seven Sisters aren't what they used to be, either.

Yes. Back in the day, Maret was widely viewed as the school you attended after being counseled out of the Big 3.

? I'm telling you, I live in 20015 and I've lived here for 25 years and my neighbors are not "DC liberal movers-and-shakers." The "neighborhood moms and dads in CCDC" -- aka, my neighbors -- have no more intel on GDS' appeal to "movers and shakers" than I do. Since we are not the "movers and shakers." Just well-educated, occasionally well-compensated professionals who tend to have jobs in journalism, policy, law, lobbying, international affairs and regulation. Interesting, yes, but not power brokers for the most part.

Are you a GDS HS student? yes?

What, in your estimation, are the Very Desirable schools of the moment that used to be reform schools? Surely you're not talking about Field, Burke, Bullis, as these are not Very Desirable. Meanwhile, the most desirable schools, STA/NCS and Sidwell have never, ever been reformatories. Neither has GDS.

I'm guessing Maret

Tell that to the Supreme Court justice that lives down the street.

Mom, please. Potomac is not in the “Big 5”, and never will be.

No - a DMV born and bred parent of two kids who have graduated from two different Big 3/Big 5. Both had 20015 friends. It doesn’t matter which school you go to, as long as you find ‘your people’ there. (And by this I don’t mean getting in with a prestigious crowd but finding genuine nice friends) What matters most for your ‘future’ is that you make the most of opportunity these schools have to offer. They all have plenty to offer.

Potomac is certainly on par academically with Maret (although admittedly very different cultures and families)

Big 3 is immutably
Sidwell
STA
NCS

At these fees you know you’re getting a value for money if you go there
