Big 3, Big 5??

Anonymous
The “best school” will depend on what’s best for your kid. Not that it matters, but most people consider the “big 3” to be GDS, Sidwell and STA/NCS.

All that matters is the BIG ONE. The BIG ONE is where you send your kids, whether it's public or private.

No it was Sidwell, STA and NCS.

People keep trying to add on: GDS, Potomac, Holton. The list keeps growing.

But the top 3 schools are Sidwell, STA and NCS

This is the correct answer. Sidwell/STA/NCS are the oldest, most established schools with the strongest reputations (currently and historically).

If you’re talking about the Big 5, then you would include GDS.

And here they are - the prestige whores that populate DCUM.

If college matriculation was truly an essential metric, the schools wouldn't be shy about publicizing their lists. It is though extremely hard to know what the comprehensive lists look like - the student Insta lists are incomplete and unreliable.

Let's be honest. It doesn't matter whether GDS is in the 5 or in the 3. What matters is whether your child likes where they go to school. A top flight kid will get a great education at any of these schools. Same goes for Potomac, Maret, Holton...

Are people still using the hashtag “big three” ( #BigThree ) on social media when they find out they are accepted or their children are ?

Does the thread being pinned perpetuate the phrase? Did it create the phrase or is it used conversationally anywhere?

I had heard it used to describe HPY as the “big three” colleges, and later the three math/science NYC high schools, and assumed it was adopted from those contexts.

Actually, the so-called big 3 was a lame attempt by privates schools parents in DC to copy the prestige of MoCo W schools.
