Why aren’t lockers being used in middle and high schools?

What? I don’t get it.

I went to a FCPS middle and high school in the 90’s. We also had just a few minutes to get to our next class but we still used our lockers!

Some high schools are larger than others.

My high school had about 600 students in each class! It was not small 😊

Last year, my kid’s high school had just under 3000 kids. The school was renovated recently and is very large. My kids said the school is too large and there’s not enough time to get to lockers and class on time.

No one said everyone has to use them or that you must go to your locker before each class. Lockers were always optional and available to help students when they need them and if they need them depending on the structure of their schedule and extra curricular activities.

I guess some schools adopted a no book bag policy but I guess that has to do with other reasons.

Many high schools DO allow lockers (you have to request them), but students CHOOSE NOT TO get them, because they are inconvenient. Schools are much more crowded now than before.

This is the reason Frost gave for not putting enough lockers for all students in during the renovation. The school is too crowded to fit both kids and lockers in the hall, they said.

Perhaps the layout of the school and/or lockers was different so it was easier to go to them? Why aren’t you able to understand that may not be the case for some schools? Some kids truly don’t have enough time to go to their lockers between each class so they need their backpacks with them to carry multiple binders, laptops, lunch etc. to get to class on time.

Name a school that is too big? It’s like you are having a hard time understanding that kids and their schedules are flexible and varying. And every school layout allows for the use of lockers in a reasonable way, just not 100% of the time. Sometimes you have two classes on a far end of the building and for those two classes you bring materials for both classes. And on those days you only go to your locker once or twice because you don’t have time. It’s about options, not right or wrong.

DP. They could carry all that stuff and still have a locker to leave coats and phones and stuff in.

I think block scheduling plays a part. My seventh-grader has a locker and never uses it. With only four classes, she doesn’t have much to switch out. She’s also at a massive secondary, and only two classes a day are anywhere near the lockers.

Block scheduling can mean more time between classes (but I know the schools don't want that because it means more time for trouble).

Our high school has 7 minutes between classes. Our middle school has 4 minutes. Both are on block schedules.

West Potomac. Recently expanded to 3000.

Instruments stay in the band room, many don't bring coats. The school is to big to get to the locker between classes or after school.
