Why aren’t lockers being used in middle and high schools?

Anonymous
My child’s middle school will not assign lockers to the students. They’re undergoing renovation and brand New lockers are being put in, yet the students will not be assigned them. The high school in our pyramid apparently does not use their lockers either. Why is this? These poor kids in the winter especially have fully loaded backpacks, jackets, instruments, lunches, water bottles, and they have to carry it all around all day to every class. It makes no sense to me why there are lockers in the schools but they refuse to assign them to students.
Are there any lockers being used anywhere in FCPS?

Because schools are too big and when you have a few minutes between classes to go to the other side of the building, and maybe use a bathroom, you can't also go to your locker.

Drugs. Search and Seizure is a grey area, in regard to high school lockers. No school administrator will tell you that.

FCPS will tell you that you can have a locker if you need one, but it will be at the other side of the school from where you need it.

The schools are the same size they were 30 years ago when everyone used lockers?

Not enough time during busy passing periods to use it.

You no longer need one, back when we attend school we had books for every class, now days all books are on the laptops, therefore we don't need lockers. Most of the kids don't use jacket the only time I saw a few kids with jackets was extremely cold and parents will not let them leave the house if they didn't wear it..(Their words). instruments- they will take that to the band class so they won't have to carry it to class to class. lunches will go inside the backpacks. and water bottles and STANLEY CUPS, are more to show...

The school I work at will assign lockers when asked, only a few kids asked to use lockers. They stopped being popular in 2020.

My high schoolers have lockers and use them.

My kids HS has lockers but no one uses them. I think they assign them to freshman only or maybe just on request now.

I just think overcrowded schools can’t assign one to each student, so they don’t assign them at all and leave it up for request.

I assume we can't go back to having 10 minutes between class periods because that would give kids too much time to get in trouble?

This has been the case for at least ten years.

I asked about this when we registered for HS and the counselor told us that lockers were optional and had to be requested. He said the reason is that kids just don't use them anymore, by choice. They don't have a lot of textbooks to swap out (that's a whole other can of worms) and use just the one laptop that they carry to every class. And I don't know about your HS, but even on the coldest days I don't see coats anywhere, just hoodies.

I think it's an improvement with no lockers. I hated mine. In high school it was such a struggle to get to the locker, re-load the backpack, and then get to class on time. Plus, those stupid combination locks didn't always open, no matter how many times you painstakingly turned that little dial and pulled!
