He’s definitely still there. Office hours are T Th 2:30 to 5:00. My son saw him during office hours. He gave DS hours of time and lots of advice. |
UVA doesnt need to do direct admit. It gets the best applicants by making them wait and show college grades. McIntire is ranked no 4 in the nation PoetandQuants |
If you read anything about "business school direct admit" you will learn that the best schools do not have direct admit. Michigan only recently adopted it. Villanova has it. But the top undergrad programs do not. And why should they? They want to see that set of first college grades to make sure the applicant can do the work and is serious. If you want direct admit, then here are the 15 schools that offer it but with the exception of Wisconsin, Michigan and Purdue, it's not a strong bunch of of schools. https://poetsandquantsforundergrads.com/admissions/direct-admit-business-schools/ Remember they are in a weaker position so want to glomb onto students via direct admit. The more respected programs don't have to do that so they wait to see how the student fares first year (some schools also allow application second year, so they end up in a 5 year program - I think UVA offers that). Remember that 80% of all students change their major. Mine did! in a big way. Most college counselors will tell you not to push locking in to any program. Let your kid explore intro classes. |
Not true.
UVA is behind the times. Thanks for the info. Everyone should apply here. It's a higher ranked school anyway.
False. This only helps the school dump very qualified students that would've gotten into any other business school into UVA's business program. It serves only the school's reputation at the cost of what the kids and parents want. Everyone should just apply to University of Michigan, Upenn, NYU, and all the other prestigious direct admit schools instead of wasting your time and energy at UVA. |

False. This only helps the school dump very qualified students that would've gotten into any other business school into UVA's liberal arts program. ?? what are you talking about?? many top biz schools are direct admit UPenn, Georgetown, Cornell, MIT, Notre Dame, NYU, etc. etc. |
Most of the top private biz schools are direct admit Many public top biz schools are not as they like to further filter out. |
| I, for one, am grateful that UVA doesn’t do direct admit. My current second year went to UVA planning on a certain major and applying to McIntire never crossed her mind until she started meeting people and learning more first semester. Because UVA currently permits enrollment in the required into to com class by alphabet (first letter of last name) only, she couldn’t explore her interest until second semester anyway. She will find out next week if she’s been accepted. Meanwhile she’s continued to take classes in her declared major so that she won’t be behind if she doesn’t get into McIntire. My guess is students like my DD are one reason why UVA doesn’t do direct admit. |
Uva knows that most people will change their major which is why they don’t let you declare until second year. |
| More of a general comment. We all recognize that colleges have limited space in each school/major to maintain faculty:student ratios and program quality - but when a college offers direct admit to some/most programs but not all, is it more of a ploy to create an aura of exclusivity for that non-direct admit program(s)? |

My high stat VA kid didn't need the additional stress and risk, so put UVA at the bottom of the college list. Got into a T20 biz school. |
My DC is in the same boat but is keen on doing a biz major. We are VA in state and DC got in to all three - UVA, VT, UMD. DC is commited to VT (direct admit to biz) |
+1 something wrong with that list. |
If you want to be a business major go the direct admit route. Business decisions are all about managing risk. Get a tough grader freshman year or come down with mono or something and have your grades tank and chances of getting into McIntire drop significantly. Why risk it. You are going into a tie-lose proposition. Just something to think about. |
