UVA Econ vs. UMD/VT Biz/Finance

Anonymous
for a VA student interested in a career in Finance/Consulting.
Which one and why?

UMD Finance.
Throw in minor in Data Science

UVA Econ with possible double major or minor in Stats/ Data Science or a minor from McIntire is a rock solid combo for consulting careers.

UMD Smith comes very close, especially if you can combine their Finance and Information Systems (highly regarded).

VT Pamplin does offer unique specializations in FinTech and Data Analytics if someone prefers that route. The b-school is growing well and can be a good fit for tech-oriented kids.

All 3 are solid options to have. For the value of in-state fees and overall reputation that consulting companies look for, UVA seems to be the top choice. Unless, other factors like fit, size, and location seem better at UMD or VT.

UVA is not a top choice if not in McIntire.

Does new UVA Business Minor change this view? UVA Econ (or Computer Science, etc.) with Business Minor from McIntire seems solid option if don't get into McIntire.

good option if didn't make it to McIntire for VA Instate.
Not necessarily top choice among those other options.

All options are solid.
Looking at post graduation outcomes:
- UVA Econ Class of 2022: $76,840 average salary and if bonus $9,503
- UMD Smith Class of 2022: $69,103 mean salary
- VT Pamplin Class of 2021: 60,500 median salary.
60% of UVA Econ grads land in Fin and Consulting.
Not exactly apples to apples, but UVA Econ, even without McIntire, doing pretty well out there.

Does anyone know how easy/difficult it is to incorporate UVA's data science minor and new major with McIntire or Econ curriculum? If so, how does that compare to VT and MD?

UVA Econ - $80,369

UMD Finance - $95162

My choice would be UMD finance and minor in CS or DS

Interesting. According to UMD data, Finance major starting salary for class of 2022 is $71K.

The US Dep. of Education data is not starting salary,

It's four years after graduation.

I don't think these are from the same data sets.

Why these schools anyway? If you are in-state in Virginia, UVA and Virginia Tech are going to be more affordable, which contributes to ROI. There are also other options in Virginia. If in-state in Maryland, UMD will be more affordable, which should be factored.
