Anybody UNhappy with Janney?

I'm sending my child to WIS rather than Deal but because the fan club for deal is so universally strong I wonder if my gut matches your gut toward how well Deal "deals" with diversity....

Recommendation - start a new thread - you might get more insight as opposed to the parents only from Janney

Good idea. Although I, for one, disagree that the "fan club" for Deal is universally strong. The curriculum at Deal is as weak as that at any other DCPS school, IB notwithstanding. A new building does not make a silk purse of a sow's ear. WIS is in every possible measure a far superior school. There is no reason to consider Deal if you can get in to WIS.

I know great bright kids who have attended Deal. Ones that I would be happy to have in my child's peer group. That being said, we did not choose Deal--we chose charter. I agree the fan club is not universally strong and every school should be evaluated on its merits, challenges and suitability for your child. WIS falls in that category as well--I'm sure it has some warts too.

Someone had a question about advanced math. My DD was in third grade last year and went to a weekly math club that was run by an excellent teacher. They worked through interesting and challenging work that was above her grade level. Almost a creative writing group for math. Not math drills. The classroom teacher also tried to differentiate but I think it was mainly giving different homework.

Thank you so much for the very helpful response to my math differentiation question!

What do people (teachers/parents/students) think of Janney's new principal? She just finished her first year there, right? (I saw her predecessor at an open house a couple of years ago and was massively underwhelmed -- score one for Rhee on the "good fires" IMHO.)
