DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| We're keeping DC at DC's current school for pre-K in 2010-2011, but are considering switching to Janney (in-bounds) for K in 2011-2012. My neighborhood friends all seem positive on the school, but I wonder if I might get more of a straight shot, warts and all perspective on an anonymous forum? Any feedback -- and especially feedback on things you wish were different about the school, as that's what I'm not hearing in face-to-face conversations -- would be very much appreciated. |

Heard a bit of drink the kool-aid in terms of liberal ethic from some friends who had kids there. You run into that a lot in DC though. Liberals in the city surrounded by other liberals sometimes forget that 'open-minded' is not just their vantage point.
Not trying to start something here, but that is all I've heard from people who had their kids there and eventually moved on in terms of a bit more diversity of viewpoint etc. Heard same with Deal. Both draw from our Upper NW neighborhood that seems to trend to the crunchy granola with lots of disposable income. |
| We wish there were more music, fine arts, and PE, but I think we'd feel those shortcomings at any DCPS elementary school. We don't have any school-specific complaints (except that we're dreading the modernization year, which you'll miss anyway). |
Did you intend to be funny? Because you are ! |
Agree about the PE, and it will only get worse this year because the construction will take up a lot of the available outside space. My biggest complaints about the school are the afterschool program and the lack of racial/ethnic diversity. Aftercare at Janney truly sucks, it is totally unstructured and I think is a disservice for the younger children (PK - 1st), I wish they would separate the childen by age but alas I do not see that happening. As for diversity, I realize that there is nothing that they can do about it and that we choose the neighborhood in the first place but it still bugs me. BTW, neither of these seem to bother my daughter one bit, so maybe these are no as big I am am making it out to be. |
I have read this 5 times and still do not get the point. |
I read it as a complaint about lack of diversity--in this case, diversity of background & viewpoint. For what it's worth, I'm granola and have lots of disposable income when compared with the average US citizen (though perhaps not compared with the average poster on this board). And I think that I & my child benefit from interactions with people who have different beliefs, including beliefs that are way to the right of mine. |
| That's nice. Like I said, did not mean to start something. On the plus side that's really the only concern I've hears about janney apart from renovation. To the concerns on after care- contact wonders in chevy chase and see if they'l bring in their well priced and well run program - they're awesome. Ps nothing against granolas...some of my best friends etc. |
Yes, aside from the knee-jerk "liberal-bashing" it's utterly incoherent. PP, could you get someone to proofread it for you, and repost here? Thx! |
Whew... I thought it was just me.

| When househunting for a DC neighborhood with solid publics, the lack of diversity (race/class/etc) in the JKLM area really turned me off. Opted to buy more house, move closer to the Hill, and will either go local or charter. |
I didn't find it utterly incoherent, nor was it knee-jerk "liberal bashing." If this is not the most liberal city in the country, it's certainly in the top 5. And yet you worry about "liberal bashing"? Now that is incomprehensible. There are a lot of people in DC that only see diversity as a character trait (race, religion, or sexual preference). One rarely, if ever, hears even lip service paid to the notion of diversity of point of view. Get off your high horse, it's not persuasive. |
LOL. JKLM again. So bizarre. What does this mean? |
Janney/Key/Lafayette/Mann/Murch |
Agreed, PP. The comments in response to the original post strike me as troll droppings, really. |
