Who DIDN’T enjoy Montréal?

Anonymous
I am the black Montrealer.

Most black people in Montreal are French speaking (from the Caribbean or West Africa). In general, Montrealers are pretty bilingual, though.

I love Montreal, but you will find more explicit racism there than in other parts of North America (eg, people assuming you are poor or like rap music even if they don't know you). And they say things out loud that other people would keep to themselves. "You are a doctor? Did you get into medical school because of affirmative action?"

It is kind of like being a black person in Europe from that perspective.

It shouldn't dissuade you, though. It is a really fun city and I would encourage anyone to visit.

Yeah, I wanted to love it, but it's a pretty boring city. The old part is definitely cute, but super small and certainly not that great if you've spent any time in Europe.

My husband and I had fun because we went for a kid-free weekend, but we really just went bar-hopping.

On the plus side, I found the people there to be very friendly!
