Name as many things as you can that used to be considered deviant but are no longer considered deviant

nail polish on men

Nail polish on women used to be deviant! Particularly any color but pink/nude.

I find this thread weird because most examples listed aren't what I'd have considered deviant. It wasn't women working. Women have always worked, for example.

But homosexuality was definitely considered deviant. And transgenderism is still considered deviant by most people.

In the early seventies when I was about 6 years old, a classmate had red nail polish and I asked my mom if I could have red nail polish and she got very upset, lol. Only allowed me to wear light pink.

My sister lived with her boyfriend/future husband before marriage in the mid 1970s and my parents were so upset. I did the same in 1990 (I'm much younger) and my parents were delighted.

There was so much shame about children born before marriage, born too early or unwed mothers. And now people routinely get married when kids are toddlers or have a child on their own. I know several people like this.

I'm glad all these particular beliefs are gone. People in many ways are kinder and more accepting than they used to be.

Read about the baby scoop era. Very sad.

Openly disclosing mental health diagnoses, treatment, and meds, disclosing assault/CSA, sex work.

I think all of those are for the good! They allow more people to embrace who they are, fully.

I know someone who “discloses her mental health diagnosis.”

All of us wish she would stop over-sharing.

On the other hand, the decline of the traditional family has clearly had disastrous outcomes for so many kids. I wouldn't celebrate these loosening standards.

Where are you from? Almost all these things are still deviant in US.

The people’s republic of Portland, Oregon

This discussion is about the USA, so what happens in Portland is irrelevant.

The decline of the “traditional family” arose out of the divorce boom that began in the 70s. The problem wasn’t a lack of marriage, the problem was the breakup of families and the fact that so many households were headed up by one struggling parent who hadn’t planned on parenting alone. Lots of problems there: the pain associated with absent fathers, poverty, and mothers focused on things other than their children.

None of these issues would be present in a functional two-parent household today in which the parents have opted out of the (arguably out of date) traditional marriage. And these problems would be less likely in a household headed up by a woman who actively chose single motherhood.

I do think our evolving definition of what makes a family is a good thing.

Mental health issues. Now it seems like if you don’t have one your the deviant.

I'm in my 50s and I can remember when women wearing pants to work or to church was considered "deviant." Was true for my first couple of office jobs.

Some others:
Admitting you have IVF.
Wearing any color of nail polish other than "natural" or pink.
Any other hair color, besides a "natural" color.
Long hair on women over 30. You were supposed to have hair cut shorter after you got married or by 30 or so. I kept longer hair.
Tattoos
Face piercings
Not wearing a slip! Do you remember when Princess Diana caused a stir because she was photographed in the sun without a slip. Too funny now.
Lgbt people
Interracial marriage
Having any sort of mental illness or even physical disability.

When I was in early elementary in the early 80s, my mom would only let me get and wear the tinted nail polishes from Avon. I don’t care what color my daughters wear.
