ED Bates Results?

Read the Selingo book - small schools in particular are focused on building a class which means as the PP has now tried to explain about 10 times, they might reject a highly qualified applicant because they already have found their tuba players or their Nevada residents or whatever box the applicant happens to check. And also, yield protection.

This is so true. There are too many high stat FP kids out there though some of us don’t want to believe it. FP kids may have slightly better shot at admission but not as much as you think. Most of the kids who likes SLAC are from money. A freshman class size range from 450-750 in these schools. They are small.

Another thread--I cannot find it--gave the link to a recent article about Bates College written by a 2021 graduate of Bates. It was not a positive piece; focused on the current campus culture of excessive political correctness (the article described the campus culture as "toxic") which adversely affects both students and professors at Bates. Decent article from a conservative viewpoint.

Decent article? In The Federalist which peddles disinformation & conspiracy theories? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Federalist_(website)

And if you want to smear a school, at least go for something plausible. The funniest part of that screed is that it described Bates as a "hotbed of pro-Hamas activity." Really? Bates is not a particularly activist campus. From what my kid says, there haven't been any protests or other activity related to the war in Gaza.

Exactly. If you’re going to badmouth Bates, have it be realistic. Even the athletes vs NARPs get along at Bates. It’s a warm tight community that suffered through a mass shooting in Lewiston a few months ago.

The Fiske Guide also states: "Since there's not much to do in Lewiston, weekend diversions mostly occur on campus."

Fiske also writes: "If you can stand the cold...."

Fiske notes that economics is the strongest program. Unfortunately, almost all of the econ profs & the dept. chair left.

Regarding racism at Bates College, the incidents with the former black head football coach and the head of security treatment of an innocent black student are well documented and were highly publicized.

Life is too short.

Wasn't aware of this. Will need to research further. Rural and cold weather is bearable to some extent. A hostile environment for URMs in general and blacks specifically? Absolutely not.

Just Google “the federalist Bates”. The thread was taken down for reasons I can’t fathom. I wonder if the mere suggestion of someone looking for the article on the internet will also result in censorship here. Will be fascinating to see.

My kid was waitlisted. 3.98 GPA (unweighted) and 1570 sat, top 1% of his class. I was surprised they waitlisted a high qualified student.

Again, they take nearly the whole class in ED. Applying RD is a waste of time. Surely your child has a guidance counselor who shared this information? It’s not rocket science.

I haven’t seen it in ED, but a few kids I know from our private with the high stats got rejected in RD last year. Bates is not a safety.

Bates is a safety for ED 1 or ED 2.

Over the past few years, Bates has had to deal with a lot of issues regarding racism, unexpected faculty departures, on-campus sexual assaults by a fellow student, and recently the entire debate team resigned in protest. Too much drama.

Yield protection as Bates understands that this student should have much better options and was probably using Bates as a back-up safety.

My ds got in regular decision with a 1400, but we visited twice because he was considering ED.

Is all this true? Junior parent here, and always just viewed Bates as the place for nice kids who couldn't get into the better NESCAC schools (with Trinity, at least until recently, getting the ones who were more arrogant than nice). But this list of problems is a surprise.

I'm the poster above with the ds who was considering ED. I had read about hints of all of these things except the sexual assault. Look at the comments on their main Instagram page.

DC currently at Bates and have not heard about any of these issues. Somebody here has an issue with Bates. Not sure why. Very nice student body and great community.
