Residential governors schools - make a difference in college apps

DC did the Gov School Humanities program. Great experience. No complaints about Radford - other than having to have a counselor chaperone when they walked into town /grocery.

Nova public kid got into the agriculture program at VT as sophomore. Great experience. Kid got in ED to UPenn this year.

Gov School, Boys/Girls State old school ways of getting in. Much better way to spend time nowadays.

Is Boys/Girls State still around? I did Girls State and best experience! Not sure if it helped but being the one person selected out of a huge school can't be bad.

For those of you whose kids applied, what did you put under the research experience section?

Nothing - there was nothing to put! Crazy for high school.

I found for both activities there was info to put. They are very valuable programs that differentiate kids.

My kid put a science fair project and then a couple interesting chemistry labs they completed in class. That was all it took. Don’t sweat that part…I’m sure they know most high schoolers aren’t doing real research just yet!

Not only did my kid get into their top school but more importantly met lifelong friends. Highly recommend!

State acceptance notifications don’t come out until April which is really late, so just trying to assess whether DC should register for a different summer program they’re interested in but I’d rather not lose money if it’s more likely now that they’ll make it through the last step

no you should not count on gov school. my kid from nova made it to this final round but did not get it. she did make it the next year.

So on 2nd round, was she able to supplement app with high SAT/ACT or PSAT test scores that wouldn’t have been part of a sophomore app? Also, which of the academies was she applying to? Mine is junior with extremely high test scores so trying to figure out how much that matters; TIA

I don't recall what was in either app. but the second one was a whole different app a different year, so not a supplement to the first. yes there was more to put in jr year but i dont recall if they asked for SAT/ACT or PSAT. she applied to humanities.

They do not ask for test scores. I’m sure you could weave them into the short answers, but really they are looking for kids both capable but also passionate about the opportunity, not kids clearly doing this as a resume builder. 10th grade DC is waiting for word on acceptance, but this is some of the advice we were given.
