Residential governors schools - make a difference in college apps

My DC has been selected to move on to final step in application process; any idea if it’s tougher to move past the regional acceptance in the NOVA area and how that translates to likelihood of acceptance into program at state level? State acceptance notifications don’t come out until April which is really late, so just trying to assess whether DC should register for a different summer program they’re interested in but I’d rather not lose money if it’s more likely now that they’ll make it through the last step

We spent two weeks learning in a classroom and then traveled to Chesapeake Bay to get hands on experience working as a marine biologist in the field. I don't know if they've changed, but it was super impressive back then.

Looking on website, sounds like same program now- 4 weeks total with hands on for last part. Question to poster that went, had you already had marine biology internships? Curious what gets a student nominated to show/prove interest? Thanks!

The program I did was hosted at Fox's Island, but they closed that research center in 2019 because of rising sea levels due to global warming. It was magical place. Hopefully they've found a new site that's comparable.

Google it if you're curious. There are some excellent articles.

The current program is through William & Mary

The governor school programs are at difference places- radford for some, w&m for others- just depends on program.

Humanities is or at least was at Radford. Radford kind of sucked, but kid still had a great time in the program. Met some great kids, enjoyed it very much. Kind of like a cross between college and summer camp.

+1 on all of this. Radford did suck and the food was apparently so bad it made some kids ill. so bring lots of snacks. but the kid loved gov school anyways.

So on 2nd round, was she able to supplement app with high SAT/ACT or PSAT test scores that wouldn’t have been part of a sophomore app? Also, which of the academies was she applying to? Mine is junior with extremely high test scores so trying to figure out how much that matters; TIA

Highly. Check me on this but I believe you get more points towards GPA for governors schools classes than APs. I knew a UVA student who entered as a second year student because of credits from the governors school programs which she attended junior and senior year. She also had acquired a 6.8 GPA that way.

My student was waitlisted last year as a sophomore (science and math one), the spot never opend up. It was flustrating because she was waitlisted for another program whch never materialized. She's applying again this year with a stronger application but i am encouraging her to have several other backups. We are not able to support pay to play programs, so if she doesn't get anything, she will be working.

This is for the summer program, so I don’t think they give grades for that

I'll bet she gets in! My kid got to final round as a soph but didn't get in. got in the next year. it's harder as a sophomore.

Do you have thoughts on how the summer program is viewed by OOS AOs?
