I attempted to suicide at umd so many times because of shit courseworks and exams. I have depression, axiety plus ADHD and this shit university doesn't care at all. |
Someone upthread said their student took a picture of the ambulance and later saw the body in it. |
I saw that post. But there was no picture included in the post. It just mentioned that a picture had been taken. The picture was not posted anywhere that I know of. |
I’m so sorry you lost your friend. I was at UMD during that time and heard about it, but news and details were harder to come by back then. No one talked about the topic like we do now. |
I attended UMD many years ago and lived in Denton. Ellicott back then was where Gemstone (above Honors) program students lived. I wonder if this student was under immense pressure. So sad. I attended school when the tornado killed 2 girls and during 9/11, and got very depressed back then. |
This is so scary |
I’m sorry you felt unsupported. My daughter who is a current student also has depression, anxiety and ADHD so I know it’s tough. She sees an off-campus therapist for telehealth sessions. She has many friends at school doing the same. Check with your insurance company for a list of therapists. The counseling center also has groups if you’re a current student. You are far from alone in your struggles. If you’re considering harming yourself, immediately call or text 988. And don’t be afraid to reach out to your parents, siblings or friends. You matter! |
This is so devastating. My son is a freshman in Ellicott on the 8th floor facing the stadium. Thankfully he was in class when it happened but he knew something bad happened when he returned to the dorm and the street was blocked and they wouldn’t let students in the front of the building. I’ve called him a few times to check in, and he says he’s fine but I’m sure the next few days will be rough.
I know an email went out to students but I don’t recall seeing anything as a parent — did I miss something? |
I am the parent of a UMd senior who called me crying today when she heard the news. She has been interning with a non-profit outfit that offers mental health services on college campuses, “Lean On Me,” but she found this tragedy so overwhelming that she herself reached out for help.
As a faculty member of a high-pressure west coast university, I can attest to the very real problem of stress on campus and the high rate of college suicides nationwide. Social media is a horrible contributing factor. Maybe the class action suit filed against Meta today will make a difference. Something has to give. |
This should be addressed. There is no reason to hide this. I want people to understand we need to allocate money for a great therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, nurse practitioner as that is what my freshman and sophomore are saying. Maryland has cancelled scheduled appts for walk in’s. Per a student at Maryland a text was sent out. Please thank those health care professionals that continue to make a difference to support the community. |
I am so so sad for all those nvolved. My daughter is struggling at a different university. I agree with the above poster who blames social media—that’s a piece of it. For my girl, the curated picture-perfect lives coming to her in a fire hydrant stream in real time definitely contributes to her feelings of isolation and imperfection. Mid term stress is part of it, but I believe our post-COVID kids (the ones really struggling) are suffering from an epidemic of loneliness. |
Folks, I do not believe the students are the blame for their anxiety but rather the “flagship” university.
I think almost every instance of these campus suicides can easily be pin to the fact that there is a huge social pressure to go to college and a huge social anxiety of failing college and they take advantage of that anxiety to milk students for every cent and they don’t even have to do anything really for them except the absolute bare minimum because what are they gonna do, not go to college? In this context, UMD is causing stress, anxiety and depression due to their business strategy of getting students hooked on majors they should NOT be in and you can thank grade inflation for that; they get students to the next level for doing the bare minimum and then they struggle and UMD just turns their back on them. The professors know about this and hate it but stay silent because of their fear of retaliation from these mysterious administrators that are making $100k+ I think it’s strange that they are so quick to offer resources for students to get help but in a few days, nobody will be thinking about this. Even today, there has been very little attention brought to light on this event and it will probably be swept under the rug. I think it is an injustice to quickly blame students for their mental problems right around the time for midterms. I think it would be wise to look into what this students major was and what led up to this event. If anybody has data on UMD students that were put on suicide watch and students that actually committed suicide, please make that public! |
I hope this is helpful: as per site UMD ALERT: UPDATE IN POLICE ACTIVITY
October 24, 2023 We have concluded our on-site investigation, and the scene has now been cleared. All roadways have reopened. The University of Maryland recognizes that this incident can be distressing for many members of our community. The university remains committed to doing all we can to care for our community. To immediately address the concerns and needs of our students, the Counseling Center has deployed staff to nearby Yahentamitsi Dining Hall. For students seeking emotional support, the Counseling Center is prioritizing availability by canceling non-emergency appointments to make staff accessible for crisis intervention. Faculty and staff can access support services offered by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Unit at the University Health Center. Safety Resources: |
I too am sorry that you have felt unsupported. You matter and there are students and other people who care. Abprior poster mentioned that Active Minds at UMD held an emergency meeting.
