Is 9/11 different since COVID and/or the 20th?

As we do every year we will watch and discuss with our kids. The events were impactful in my dh and I's lives and we want to make sure our kids don't forget what happened. As others have said, we are so sad at the state of our nation and miss the American spirit that was present in the days right after 9/11.

I mostly remember the hate directed towards Muslims and the useless wars that followed in the aftermath of 9/11.

Part of that was the Muslim community never spoke out immediately and forcefully condemning the actions that took place in 9/11. PR wise was a terrible decision. In addition, they should have volunteered or donated to 9-11 causes.

In addition some Muslim counties in actual school text books had 9/11 never happened. WTC was a hologram and names of people died were govt employees who were put in a sort of witness protection and issued new identities. There were tons of websites with this propaganda.

This is nonsense. Why should they feel like they have anything to do with some loons who decided to hijack planes.

And can I add it's really rich to say this considering that today you can't even get half the country and a major politcal party to acknowledge that Jan.6 was anything other than some tourists taking a walk. And the acknowledgement of the officers whose lives were affect on that day, whether they died that day or suffer from PTSD and are still living with the pain. I'm waiting for their monument for saving the American democracy.

I distinctly recall footage all across the middle east of people cheering the twin towers coming down. While I do not agree with any type of retaliation against Muslims, I don’t exactly recall wanting to be lectures by anyone about being sensitive to their feelings at the time.

WTF? As if Muslims in the US had any control over what Muslims on the other side of the world are doing?

And let's be real us normal ones weren't going to speak out - bc we were not trying to draw the attention of white folks who suddenly saw ALL of us at the enemy. Frankly we were just trying to get thru the day to day of having people glare at us when we had to go to the grocery store or when we were at the dr's office and the nurse calls out Mohammed and that's you and now everyone is watching you walk in wondering if you're a terrorist.

If I'm being even more real most of us were trying to keep our heads down and hold onto our jobs and not get race discriminated out as the economy got shaky then too - at least in my industry in finance.

I am sorry so many of us are so stupid. It was not your job as a marginalized minority to apologize for some whackos that have nothing to do with you.

+1. However, that certain nationalities (like the Palestinians) were partying over the violent deaths of thousands of innocents is unforgivable.

What is the new national trauma? Covid??? Get real.

Yes. COVID. It changed us as people and as a world. Have you forgotten already?

No, I, like most of everyone else, have moved on. You Covidians go on telling everyone else the sky is falling while wearing your completely useless masks with your 6+ boosters. You’re still going to get covid and in all likelihood it will be a bad cold if that.

9/11 was a speck compared to COVID. Now, the incredible overreaction to 9/11 is closer to the impact of COVID.

Why would you be offended by people in other countries cheering? That’s what Americans do when we go to war. And, we have inserted ourselves into the lives of so many who have nothing to do with us. If you can’t understand why people abroad might hate us, you are pretty dense. It’s about our foreign policy. This is not some personal slight to you. What a way to live to think about your own personal forgiveness here.

Seriously. I had ptsd from 9/11 for a long time. I thought I was going to die that day and I know many who did. I hate that it’s been forgotten.

It is interesting how the deaths of 3000 people brought our country together.

But the deaths of millions drove us apart.

Celebrating the death of my uncle who was murdered in 9/11 is sick.

What the hell is wrong with you? Plenty of Muslims spoke out against extremism and violence. Plenty died in the towers as well.

3000 is a tragedy.

Millions are a statistic.

PP here - excuse me? Did I say I was celebrating? Did I say I was supporting those who celebrated? You're just salty bc Muslims weren't "speaking out" - guess what we were trying to go about our normal lives and jobs while YOU all kept glaring at us and spitting at us. Sorry we didn't then feel like stopping and apologizing to you for something that WE PERSONALLY DID NOT DO. I was no where near the airports, nor those planes, nor knew the people who did the attacks, nor how they planned or funded the attacks; nor was a family member or confidante or any of those attackers who could've tipped off the authorities. I legit heard about it on NBC just like you did.

And keep in mind this was 2001 - pre social media - so it wasn't as easy to jump on LinkedIn or Twitter or Facebook and denounce whatever you wanted to denounce to prove you were one of the "good American Muslims." In order to denounce, you had to be important enough that the local ABC station or newspaper would cover what you say. Look back, there ARE mosques and Muslim organizations that did that - tons of them.

You may not realize this but there is no ONE Muslim community. We don't have a Vatican or a papacy that can issue an official statement. So I'm not sure who THEY is who should have volunteered or donated to causes. Even your local mosques that you'd find in Reston or Baltimore or wherever - people come and pray and only socialize amongst their nationality at the mosque, if any. So yeah Somali Muslims vs. Indian Muslims vs. Saudi Muslims are entirely different people aside from the manner of prayer - their politics, views, and languages vary. Even then mosques DID put out statements condemning - so IDK what you were looking for. I'm guessing what you really wanted is your Muslim neighbor up the street to show up tears in her eyes begging forgiveness and handing you a homemade dessert, so you could pat her on the head telling her it's ok - you know she's one of the good ones. Sorry but we had our hands full at that time with you all glaring at us and spitting on us when we had to do mundane things like grocery shop and not get fired at work.

And you may also find it shocking but an individual 26 or 45 year old Muslim living in the US has zero control over how Saudi or Iran or whatever country teaches its 7th grade social studies classes. They're not asking our opinion. Again I'm very sorry about that.
