Can someone explain why teen kids need to fundraise $1,000 for a public school sport?

The band knocking on doors and begging for money is the worst! They should set up in the community and play for donations, not just knock on doors!

In our society everyone wants others to GoFundMe their wants so obviously teens are doing the same.

Our high school charges over $1000 for anyone who wants to be on the crew team.

I've said this for years...or at the very least give me a ticket to an upcoming concert.
I'm not just doling out money.

I like the mulch sale our school does in early spring. The kids work hard and it brings the community together. I hate the social media campaigns. There are so many other ways to raise funds but people don't want to make any effort.

Please keep in mind, it's not the kids that decide what kind of fundraising the team is doing.

About 2/3 of my son's team can pay for costs outright like out of town meals, warm up sweats, etc. but 1/3 cannot. Before the money from fundraising comes in, the coaches pay for them since no one wants to make this public and humiliate the kids. Fundraising (where the parents who can pay contribute the most as you would hope) covers all the costs equally. I oversee the team's spending and get reimbursed from the athletic department. Please don't contribute if you don't want to. Just delete the email.

And in my home town in Massachusetts, football players earn funds by raking leaves in fall. My dad picked up a fundraising flyer at the senior center. The team ended up so busy they turned away potential customers!

Arlington County doesn't allow car wash fundraisers anymore. They don't want the soap runoff going into the Chesapeake Bay. I know because my kids middle school band used to do this as their major fundraiser until it was shutdown

What do you think of this? Our FCPS fundraisers for spring start in fall. Then some kids find out in spring they didn’t make the team. To me it is ballsy to ask/demand kids fundraise before roster is established.

Don't give until they know whether or not they made the team or give via credit card and dispute the charges if they get cut

I think this is a good way to do it but DC's team has a mandatory fundraising requirement. The coaches have said they need to raise a certain amount to stay on the team. This is a pretty wealthy, very low FARMS school so presumably they are not fundraising for basic needs that you described.

We got a bill for $375 for my kid's high school soccer uniform.

This was more than we spent for Club. It's a private school--with their endowment and high tuition I would have guessed that stuff was included in the price.

Hi,

I am writing an article about travel sports fundraising and would love to speak with you. I won't need to use your full name. If you're interested, please email me at mhainer@gmail.com.

Thanks! Michelle
