Can someone explain why teen kids need to fundraise $1,000 for a public school sport?

The problem is even if the parents can-and are willing to, the coaches still want them out there soliciting more more more.
From what I can tell, there is absolutely no accountability on where this money is going, either-at least not in my kid's team.

In PG county Maryland, on Saturdays in spring or fall we often see sports team players washing cars to fundraise. I wish more businesses in NoVA would offer their parking lots and free water to help out teams!

And in my home town in Massachusetts, football players earn funds by raking leaves in fall. My dad picked up a fundraising flyer at the senior center. The team ended up so busy they turned away potential customers!

Our local church in the Alexandria portion of Fairfax has a different group washing cars in their parking lot almost every weekend

For the poor kids with athletic talent to play.

The athletic director at my kids public high school went nuts and one year my kids sports team was TOLD we all had to raise $600 one way or another. It was for new equipment that our brand new school already had. Kids sport was low cost and the school barely supported the team. The ad was a jerk and treated our sport like it was a joke. Most of the parents ignored it after seeing the ad mock our kids.

It would be better if we all backed off of supporting hs sports so much. This is all insane.

No one is forcing any of you to support the kids sports. You are free to delete the request with the link.

My kids participate on their HS's activities, one sports the other theater. Both have been raising funds. For uniforms, a bus, a light board, whatever. I choose to support the school activities, but no one is forcing you to

We had to raise money for our DI ( destination imagination) team to go to Missouri this summer. They won the state champs which was unexpected. A couple of the parents on our team would have struggled with the cost. The entry fee alone was $5000. Plus airfare, hotels, etc. I’m so thankful we have a supportive community in an area most of you wouldn’t live in. They really rallied for us.

The kids are made to sit and are lectured after practice about how the fundraising efforts have not made enough money. Emails are sent out to the kids (multiple times) telling them they have not done enough to get more donations.

The real problem is what we have turned high school sports into. It's as bad as college sports. It all needs to be stepped down.

I despise this. I was lectured by my kids coach because our family only donated $100 which I completely regret now. I was naive then. The money wasn't even being raised for our sport.

Say that all you want but my kids and I got angry lectures from our coach and the athletic director. The whole world of high school athletics is sick.

For the 4 years my kids were on a specific team, not one cent went to help any other student.

Uniform and equipment gets weathered, old, and outdated and very rarely do public school put any money towards sports (and why should they??). As it is the county already maintains the turf, stadium, transportation to away games, and on site athletic traininers. That's plenty that us tax payers are covering for sports.

Where else do you think the money should come from Op?

Every player has a minimum they need to meet. Public school.

Shameless and tacky af.

At least that’s some effort. A helicopter mom texting donation links out for their brat is zero effort. Freakin shake down.
