This happens everywhere. Agree it’s $hitty but kids need to be aware drunk in public is illegal and can lead to arrest. |

PP who asked about Longwood...
I think the question is: why bother with Longwood when UMW is more convenient and CNU has the Greek culture if you are into that. What does Longwood have to offer that others don't? --- most people can't answer that with anything that makes it a better option -- and so Longwood doesn't make the cut. It's probably fine for what it has. It's just that you can get that at other places. And, as someone who drives I-95 regularly --- less time on 95 is MORE. |
No snobby attitudes like this |
Then answer the question -- what is unique to Longwood that you can't get at another college? If you live closer to Longwood than any other option, then sure, it makes sense. But, what is Longwood's pitch to someone who is otherwise considering CNU? or UMW? or Radford? What sets Longwood apart? I just don't know of anything that makes Longwood "better" than the other options. If you are coming from NoVa, then trust me -- a shorter distance when you are going back and forth to pick up or drop off the student is a big plus. |
What sets Bridgewater a part? These are normal schools for people not obsessed with “better” |
| I can’t imagine telling anyone “my kid goes to Longwood.” Lol |
Hopefully your kid is more mature |
One of our kids toured both Longwood and UMW and didn’t chose either. But they preferred Longwood because it felt more like a traditional campus, especially since it’s a D1 sports school. UMW felt so much smaller and also felt like there was less of a campus life feel. |
I visited Longwood a couple years ago. If you are interested in nursing, Longwood is definitely on the short list. That program definitely hits above its weight. CNU and UMW don’t offer BSN. For me, I like campuses with a classic recurring architectural theme. Hokie stone at Virginia Tech, red bricks and white columns at Radford, red bricks at University of Lynchburg, etc. I found the architecture at Longwood to be all over the map, with few big open spaces. YMMV. At the admitted students day, all students and guests were accommodated in an auditorium on campus. I was a bit disappointed that there did not seem to be any high ranking administrators there to address the crowd. At the end of the day, Longwood is a modest school primarily aimed at providing education to Virginia’s south east. |
I wonder how many people who google “longwood” end up at a web site that has anything to do with a college. They gotta do like the current Arcadia did. |
Why? |
| Longwood is the right fit for a certain type of kid. My kid thought CNU looked like a Disneyland version of a college- new made to look old so for him that wasn’t the right fit. UMW is also the right fit for a certain type of kid- it’s not for everyone even if it’s closer to the DMV which based on this thread is not a selling point. Longwood is not UVA, and it will give your kid a good education if they are motivated and need a little more support from professors. College is what you make of it- there is more than one path to success. |

Longwood student population=5096 UMW student population= 3493 Is the difference that noticeable? |
