Longwood University

Does anyone have any recent experience with Longwood? Not sure why this school isn't mentioned as much as UMW and CNU.

because it's not as good? Its a last resort for people who can't get into a better VA state school. About the same level as Radford.

Also FarmVille is not as desirable a location

Have you visited recently?

DD's friend who was 21+ was walking back to her dorm from a party, with other girlfriends, and was threatened with arrest. All were old enough to drink. These are not wild, loud young women.

This. Except it is pretty safe to take out the question mark.

Longwood is one of the weakest, if not the weakest University in the State system.

We visited Longwood for its nursing program, which definitely deserves a look for anyone interested in nursing. We liked the little town of Farmville. But it was a bit of a haul getting there. We found the campus a bit too compact without any unifying architectural themes. Compare that to Radford, say. All the kids visiting that day were able to fit in a large auditorium. For a school it’s size, I had hoped to hear from a fairly high ranking administrator during the several presentations. But that wasn’t the case. They do have a couple brand new towering dorm buildings that are really nice.

We visited for my B-student daughter and wanted to love it, but it didn't impress at all. I got the feeling that most students are from small towns south of Richmond--a NOVA kid might find it confining, isolated and unsophisticated. It also seemed oddly cliquey--high visibility of Greek life and secret societies. The education and nursing programs seem to be the big attractions. I wouldn't go there for a low-demand major because they just don't have the name recognition, alumni network or proximity to internships to help build a career path.

It's like "what's the point?"

Why would someone choose Longwood over UMW (which is closer to DMV), or VCU (larger, city vibe), or even Radford?

That's the problem. Longwood has nothing to make it a better option than all the other options unless you live nearby.

Longwood offers very affordable nursing and education degrees. For fields where the name on the degree doesn't mean more money, cost is a major factor

NP. Not sure that the question is choosing over the other schools mentioned. I view it as an option if can't get accepted to UMW, VCU, ODU, CNU and Radford.

NP. We haven’t visited but are following for feedback. It’s on the list for us to check out this year for my son. He wants a school that’s fairly small to medium and in rural area. He doesn’t want a pressure cooker. We will also look at Radford. He hasn’t visited the actual schools but hates the Virginia Beach area so that’s why he’s not considering ODU or CNU.

^adding to my post, at least on the website the freshman dorms look nicer than some other schools but we haven’t been in person yet. Those are the things my kid is looking at. Any feedback on the residence halls?
