McKinley tech incoming families

Good!! This makes me happy to read. DS is a 6th grader with strong STEM interest, and we’re starting to think more about HS. I’ve been wondering if McKinley Tech would be a good option.

I loved that there was a full orientation week and a separate orientation for parents last week. My student felt welcomed and is excited for Friday's convocation/ pep rally.

This should really be the baseline standard, not the exception.

Yep, standards and expectations are low in DC and people don’t realize what the baseline standard is.

Why when when I did my research why only 656 kids attend at this high school!

i took the pt to be that this forum is white and relatively racist/low intellegence and therefore would overlook such a school, nom white even if the top school in the city

This was bumping a thread from last year.

I'm curious if any families here are sending their kid this year. I am.

A couple of concerns but overall things seem okay so far.

We dropped our son off at 8:15 this morning thouogh and he said he didn't get past security until 9:15. Not very efficient. Really a waste of time.

McKinley family who started last year, this does level out. Last year I know one of the machines went down and slowed it up. Haven't heard if that is a cause this year.

parent of senior at McKinley Tech. the security lines will get better, but you should anticipate a little bit of a wait always - especially as it gets closer to start time for the 1st class. There are only two lines for the high school. My kid has had a great experience so far (aside from a couple random teachers, but that is a good life lesson as well )

So, no. Not on DCUM.

DCUM has plenty of Black parents, myself included.

Fwiw, DC's in 10th at Banneker and the same issue occurred during the first week for both years. It tends to move quicker once kids are acclimated to the process (utilizing the cell phone lockers efficiently and getting through security). It's no different than transiting through a hub with novice and experienced travelers during peak hours. It will improve.

Yes, we figured out a commute schedule for our family that I think will work better and my son said that security was much easier to clear. First weeks are hard for everyone!
