They are putting a lot of money into STEM. There's a new building that houses the physical sciences and another being constructed:

Do you apply directly to engineering?

My kid decided to go to a SLAC, but if she had not U of Delaware or Pitt are where she would have gone. They are easy to travel to from the DMV but not “too” close to home (which was her take on the U of MD. She said she did not want to run into kids from high school)

Yes. My son is a recent graduate from there with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Great school and he has a great job now.

It's very white and had a recent racist incident against a black Muslim American child.

Really? Do you have a link for that? That would genuinely surprise me as a former Newark resident

Goodle is your friend.

Maybe share a link for everyone, though? You don't have to be rude.

+1

And I’m not Goodleing anything because some rude DCUM tells me to do so.

Even googling, I can’t seem to find anything. The university police arrested a local HS student for endangering their officers, but that honestly doesn’t seem as horrific as the poster made it sound.

“her take on the U of MD. She said she did not want to run into kids from high school”

30,000 undergrads you won’t unless you want to.

To be fair, I didn’t want to attend UD for basically those reasons-too close to home, too many people from my hs. 1/3+ of my graduating class went there.

I wound up spending time there on my breaks. My HS friends introduced me to their friends, so my friend group back home grew.

Was searching for another Delaware thread and stumbled upon this one. Wanted to add some info. I'm an early 90's grad. There is partying at UD, but no more than many of the other state flagships around the country. I made a good group of friends and we are still tight and we support one another. My son is a 2nd year at another college and my UD friends in finance have all taken calls from him wrt internships. Ultimately, if the outcome you seek is a well adjusted grad positioned for financial success, UD is a home run.

What is the dorm situation/availability like?

The direct admit nursing is a big deal. Which is why my daughter picked it. She also got Honors and the 17k grant.

The gravy is good as off tuition. She moved off campus and Newark DE is cheap rent. I also like at around 102 miles from my house I let her drive back in forth during breaks.

My other kid went 400 miles away and a real headache and never went to homecoming or parents day as too far.

Delaware is a Mix DMV, Maryland, Delaware, NJ and Long Island. So the friends my daughter made she can stay in touch with after graduation.

My other daughter friends she made live 309-500 miles away.
