I agree actually. We should be providing people with enough food to eat but not junk food or cigarettes. |
I'm not sure why everyone always acts like no one is abusing welfare. It has a lot of bad secondary effects, like creating a disincentive to get married.
Polygamists have multiple wives and dozens of children, but the state only recognizes one marriage. That leaves the rest of the wives to claim themselves as single moms with armies of children to support. Doing that means they can apply for welfare, which they do. And it's all legal. |
Because Ronald Reagan, hateful bigot extraordinaire, normalized it in the 80's. And it stuck. |
PP didn't say the only. But, the US does excel at it. And that is not something to be proud of. So you can shove that eyeroll where the sun doesn't shine. |
Most of DCUM gets middle class welfare in the form of the mortgage interest deduction and lower long-term capital gains rates. Even if you’re hit by the AMT, you still get lots of tax breaks. |
In the past this would be a motivating story. Today, I would hope that someone in this position would be able to receive some type of benefits, at least something like free public transportation, help from non profits, like meals on wheels. |
What is the reason we have both the lowest unemployment in modern history and the lowest rate of participation in the labor force? Personally, as a person who finds fulfillment in working and who would HATE to be on the government dole, I would prefer it if MORE people would exit the workforce for something, anything like welfare. There are so many people with total BS jobs collecting a paycheck. |
How much do you think that is in total? Try to live on $2-3k a month and tell me how not working makes it easier? You really would not take benefits just to make sure no one else could. Also, see state of Utah and their percentage of people living on assistance... |
Why do you think working is a virtue? Serious question. |
my god. shut up. WHO CARES?!?! The welfare queen is a myth. And even if they are it's a not much money to be outraged about. |
Most of this was done away with now that nearly everyone files standard deduction. |
My neighbors get SNAP benefits. I know this because I have gotten their mail about it multiple times. They also drive multiple Mercedes, no one goes to work, everyone has enough money for constant pot and they get Door Dash several times a week.
It's hard not to judge when you see things like that, but I try to give them some grace. |
Is this mostly in Utah? Idaho? |
During COVID, I started to watch court case streamings, including child support/custody disputes. It was UNBELIEVABLE how many able-bodies adults could find any excuse in the book not to work (and thus not have to pay child support). |
40% or Americans pay no federal income tax at all. And it’s not the middle class. So please GTFO with that. https://www.forbes.com/sites/howardgleckman/2022/10/27/the-number-of-those-who-dont-pay-federal-income-tax-drops-to-pre-pandemic-levels/ |
