Why so much anger towards people on welfare?

Even if dc lifted the 5 year limit, for the love of God take a peek at the requirements and the low amount you can receive. Nobody is thriving on tanf their entire lives.
You must have children (that homeless guy under the bridge doesn't qualify), you must engage in searching for work/training activities, and, for example, a family of 4 can receive $850 per month MAX. And that's high. It varies by state.

https://dhs.dc.gov/service/tanf-district-families

Actually only DC and Tennessee (I think) are the only two states/places that do direct cash assistance. Most states don’t spend their TANF money or do marriage counseling or abstinence education with TANF money.

Tennessee is sitting on hundreds of millions of federal TANF money because they don’t feel like giving it out.

Oh sorry, make that hundreds of BILLIONS.

This is a good watch:

If you like that John Oliver piece, you would also like this book:

https://www.amazon.com/Poverty-America-Matthew-Desmond/dp/0593239911/ref=asc_df_0593239911/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=611935779797&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2427312362934599962&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007532&hvtargid=pla-1729291995526&psc=1

I think Oliver’s staff used the book to inform that segment. It’s a great book. Author won a Pulitzer for his previous book on eviction.

Does the book talk about how difficult it is to evict crappy section 8 tenants?

At least the cashier is working and doing a job.

I'm not saying OP could be working but uses welfare as an excuse to not work, but there are absolutely many many people who are capable of working, but would rather be paid (via welfare) to not work.

There are of course some people who legitimately cannot work and need welfare.

Dumba** most people who receive government assistance DO WORK!!!!!!

They usually work under the table jobs.

That’s untrue. They don’t qualify for assistance without legitimate work.

It’s astonishing how ignorant everyone is about public assistance! You have deeply held prejudice built around complete fiction.

You don't know much about what really goes on. They work a legit job up to the max allowed, then supplement with cash job. Do you think everyone is following the rules?

I don't understand. Are you saying DC and TN are the only states that offer cash assistance?

I do not know where you are getting this misinformation.
It is true that under TANF, some states are using a portion of their TANF block grant money for other state services not related to grant assistance.
But it is just not the case that only a handful provide cash assistance under TANF.

Even if you are thinking about cash assistance to childless individuals rather than families, it’s still more than 2 states.
As of 2020, 25 states offer some form of cash assistance beyond TANF.
Source: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

Yes there are only two places in the United States that offer cash assistance. One is DC. I thought the other was TN but other posters said no. So it’s another State that I don’t remember. Other states sit on the money or use it for marriage counseling.

When we went to the grocery store, my mother would sometimes comment after we left, how full the grocery carts would be of the people using food stamps (no EBT card at the time). And how they usually bought junk my mother couldn't afford to buy. And they had more children, sometimes in diapers and no shoes. And they would buy cigarettes. I think the buying of the cigarettes was the kicker. LoL. Lots of judgment.

Maybe they shopped once or twice a month; no wonder the carts were full. Junk food is cheaper, has more packaging around it, lasts longer. I was an Au Pair in Maryland for a lovely middle class educated people. They bought so much crap for their children and you expect lower class people know better. Their diets have been corrupted from infancy.
More children? Maybe they didn't have birth control, maybe they needed them to feel love. Raising kids is not easy, but they had need for them that was clearly stronger than thinking how hard the next 18-20 years would be.
Cigarettes? Everyone smoked in 70s.
I judge you, because you saw better and you know better. Since you are so much better and know better, you should know exactly why the poor behave the way they do. They can't help it really. I few can. There's a good movie quote that goes something like that,' first you make thieves and then you punish them'. So, first the society creates poor people, keep them poor for generation and punish them for that.

I want to agree with you but I grew up in a lower class environment, think mother took in laundry to earn extra food dollars. I got a job as soon as I could and contributed to the family budget, but somehow managed to get myself through college and come out stronger and financially comfortable. My observation from the neighborhood I grew up in, pure f g laziness. No excuse for an 18 year old girl to sit on her parents door steps all day rather than finding job. Not one excuse. Yet I witnessed this throughout my early years and was especially in tune with it in my teen years. Sodas and bags of chips (we never had those, because we did not have extra money for junk food in our grocery cart), the young poor people in my neighborhood would walk to the local store, grab some snacks and sit in front of their houses laughing at us coming and going to our jobs, be it a babysitter or whatever. Laziness, just pure f g laziness, well that, and knowing they could suck off tax paying idiots for the rest of their soulless lives. No sympathy from me whatsoever.

Your story reminds me of growing up. I was LMC but my parents managed to save enough to send me to state college. I was the kid that wore Caldor’s (discount department store) clothes and sneakers. When we went to the mall and asked to get a soda because we were thirsty? They said “we have soda at home, you can use the water fountain.” A rare treat was fast food or a subway sandwich. I worked multiple jobs. But now, nobody wants to live like this or it’s some great injustice that a kid would have grow up like this.

I remember Caldor! There was one in the Hanover Mall! And Zayre's too!
TBH I think you were luck you got clothes from Caldor. I just didn't get any clothes! Literally--I had one pair of pants, 3 shirts...that's it!

It's like the fraud rate for PTSD benefits. I know several veterans receiving generous disability benefits who never saw a single day of combat, yet it's impossible to prove they don't have PTSD. I wouldn't be surprised if the fraud rate is at least 25%.

How do you have this information?

NP. I can tell you first-hand that every single military member I know who was either retiring or leaving the service made absolutely sure that they went to the docs/clinics to report every single physical, mental and emotional ailment they had in order to get a disability rating.

I think most Americans have NO CLUE how the vast majority of veterans are getting significant "disability" payments, even those who have never seen a day of deployment. In contrast, I've worked with those who were truly disabled (as in missing a limb) who fought hard to stay on active duty and continue serving in whatever capacity they could.

This was also corroborated by a family member who is a practitioner for the VA - she said it is disgusting how many people are gaming the system and gobbling up appointments when those who really need assistance and care are waiting. And waiting. And waiting.

I mean, my neighbor has basically admitted that she is essentially faking/exaggerating her “long Covid” to milk disability as long as possible. She’s a high level Fed and has now been on LTD for 18 months and says she will be on it “indefinitely.” She runs book clubs, hosts large parties, travels extensively, etc. all while suffering from supposedly debilitating “brain fog.”

You clearly haven’t read the whole thread. But there are few posts like yours from people who think they are better than poor people because they smugly think to themselves that they aren’t on government assistance but ignore the government welfare they receive in the form of a mortgage deduction, government student loans, government subsidized employer healthcare, government subsidized 529s & 401Ks. You bought into the GOP lies.

Would you rather those people beg on the streets in desperation?

Understand that policy is made not based on how people should behave, but on how they tend to. No “should.”

No, we would prefer to cut welfare and have able-bodied people work jobs. Then we can stop importing even more uneducated welfare recipients who work cash jobs "because we need the labor" while receiving benefits for the children they give birth to as soon as they arrive.

Again, not taxing something does not equal "subsidy." You are starting with the viewpoint that government owns everything. It doesn't "give back" people's money when it doesn't tax it. You are Marxist if you hold this viewpoint. Why not move to one of the many successful countries that espouses this view? Oh wait, there aren't any.

We all prefer this, that or the other thing. Doesn’t matter what you or I prefer. People are going to do what they please and we have to mitigate the fallout of that.
