+2 I don't understand OP's objection to bagging. Because the grocery worker is paid $14 an hour? To stand your unhelpful ground... just because? WTF? Sometimes I wonder if it's nature or nurture where people are aholes. It costs nothing to be like "sure thing! slide 'em over!" In fact, it probably saves you some time. And if you have luxurious time... you should be the first to jump in and lend a hand. Come on OP, do better. |
You sound ridiculous. |
Honestly, I have noticed that it's not always clear if the cashier will bag or not. But I try to think about working at a job that is so repetitive, that pays lower than it should, and I realized that the 90 seconds it takes to bag my own groceries it just not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. |
I prefer bagging my own groceries. I can make sure fragile things are handled appropriately. I can bag them according to where they go in my home to make the unbagging easier. I can bag them fuller so everything fits into my bags. I think the people who get upset at this stuff don't feel important anywhere else so they have to look for places where they can be 'waited on' to feel special and powerful. |
YTA - suck it up for one time and if you find it’s happening a lot, politely talk to the manager about the store policy. |
+1 SO high maintenance - DH gonna tire of that shiite QUICK. |
I would have bagged - cashiers make little money and have a boring but important job. What does it hurt to bag your own stuff? |
You're both wrong. I am a former cashier. Did you bread and eggs get put on the bottom by her after you stood there doing nothing? |
Normally they deliver this message by cramming all your items into whatever space they have beyond their register so that eventually you give in because your stuff is getting pushed around and stacked.
So, I guess at least she was direct. I try to be patient with the cashiers even when I feel frustrated at how rude they are because it's a hard job and they aren't paid much. |
Next time you see the sweeper at the store, offer to sweep a couple of aisles for them. They make little money and have and boring and important job too. |
Is this supposed to be a valid burn? Ridiculous and irrelevant retort unless I am the one who made any mess they are cleaning up. And I always offer to clean up if I drop something that spills on the floor - they always say no but appreciate that I try to show respect for their time and work. |
NP I used to wait tables. If a server asked me to move my glass closer, I absolutely would. But I would make a mental note that this is a sub par waiter - good waiters would never do that. And also good waiters never hand the plate of food to the customer - they place it down in front of them. |
Former grocery cashier here. I prefer to bag my own because I bag in categories and it takes less time to unpack. I don't mind doing it but it does drive me crazy when I am in the middle of bagging and they ask me for my bonus card or whatever. Um..I'm doing your job for you, you can wait another 8 seconds while I finish this up. And I'm pretty fast so its not like I keep them waiting.
Having said that, cashier was rude. They should not command you to bag. You are not wrong. |
Maybe you should ask them to step aside so you can scan your groceries too? What does it hurt to do that? |
Fascinating. There are 2 types of people who live in this world - those who ask "what can I do to help?" and those who ask "what can you do for me?" You choose your own category, but I guess you're also the same person who leave their cups on shelves in stores, carts in parking lots, and expect people to clean up after you because... why should you pick up after yourself? |
