2023 - 2024 school calendar

How does the 177 student day occur? How do they eliminate 3 days, and why 3?

Arlington, Prince William, and Montgomery all observe Veterans Day. Interestingly, Loudoun doesn’t, but they are observing Diwali on a Monday while the rest don’t observe when it falls on a weekend.

The survey results are pretty straightforward. People like the longer Winter and Spring Breaks and are willing to go later in the year.

However, if new days off are added, everyone would like to swap with a current day off.

The teachers and students would be ok with asynchronous days, but not the parents.

Well, it depends on your definition of “observe”. Loudoun is the only County that actually observes Veteran’s Day! My bff’s kids go to a school there and every year their ES puts on a nice salute to our Vets program where her DH, dad and brother all attend.

Veteran’s Day, like Indiginous Peoples’ Day, should be school days.

I would prefer more of the teacher work days in January or February for longer ski weekends. Also, a two week winter break for the same reason.

But I would think Loudounujelu operationally actually NEEDS Diwali off given what a big amount of Indian families they have now. Which is not the case % wise in the other counties (nor I are the other religious holidays operationally needed)

Agree. And my kids’ ES used to do a very nice Veterans Day program too. WAY more memorable and thoughtful than getting the day off with your kids.

What in the world were they think with the last week of school on the green calendar??? 2 days off in a 4 day week of class time the last week of school? No one will be there. It's too bad, cause I'd like to start only 1 week before labor day. That also has a full week for spring break, one week back to end 3rd quarter and then a 5.5 day weekend. Dumb.

Well, since their top priority is a "multi-year calendar that allows for forward planning" will we at least get a 2 or 3 year calendar out of this? Even if it's bad? I'd prefer that.

It was included only to show you “can’t” start just 1 week before Labor Day.

Not me. I would rather the new SB next year gets to set their own calendar when the religious holiday bonanza can be reassessed. Binding the new SB into this approach is why they are promising to keep it steady for multiple years, NOT because parents want it for planning.

The law only requires 165 days. Loudoun only has 170 instructional days this year!

How did we used to manage to start after labor day, have a 2 week winter break, a week spring break, and get out by june 20? Lets go back to that.

All the options suck but esp the one that goes way late into June. No way!
