But what’s even stupider is we could do both by just picking the week right after Easter instead of the one before.

Except Good Friday….

That could easily be an O day like other religious days.

Why not an O day OFF like the others? There is no solving all of it.

It's not actually surprising that the most educated county in the US can't put together a school calendar. Put too many PhDs in the same room and this is what happens.

Team Orange or Team Green (8-day winter break) Please and thank you.

(Remember when we used to copy everything Montgomery County did? Can we do that here?)

Teacher here. The placement of the PD days is where the county is screwing up.

For example, Veteran’s Day should be a school day. It was for years. Columbus Day should also be a school day. You shouldn’t have days off directly after spring break.

The one thing I am happy about is multiple calendars happening at once. I just wish they had some actual teachers looking at this stuff to make theirs versions better.

There are teachers on the calendar committee. I served on it a few years ago as an ES teacher. I didn't feel I was taken seriously. Others were actually a bit condescending.

I loved the Green calendar right up until the final week of school. They need to find a way to squeeze two more days somewhere and end on the 14th. The two holidays the following week make it a mess. Or just go with 178 instructional days.

That is upsetting to hear.

It is so expensive to travel for spring break when it is aligned to easter - the only reason we are traveling this year is because Southwest just decided to hold a sale to make up for its holiday travel fiasco.

I also looked at the slide deck and it's very clear that they build these calendars around what teachers and staff want and not what families want. Families said they did not want spring break tied to easter, but teachers and staff did.

Wait why don’t you want it tied to Easter? My family definitely voted for that, although I wish it was only a couple days rather than a full week.

Because it is VERY expensive to travel that week. Not all of us have enough money to pay double the cost of normal flights for our family of four. We like to visit my family at spring break and this makes it a lot more difficult.

I have a 4th grader and Veteran's Day was not a holiday until two years ago. I was excited in K and 1st because it was literally the ONE day of the entire school year that I had off and my child did not. And now that's gone, LOL

It's also so stupid to give off veteran's day because it's frequently the same week as Election Day (like this year) and the kids have a stupid three day week.

NOBODY CARES ABOUT GOOD FRIDAY EXCEPT YOU.

I haven’t looked through all versions, but given that they are going out 3 years you can easily get a sense of priorities.

Always a Holiday:

Labor Day
Rosh Hashanah
Yom Kippur
Veterans Day
Diwali
MLK
Presidents Day
Eid Al-Fitr
Memorial Day
Eid-al-Adha (when it falls during the school year)
Juneteenth (when it falls during the school year)

Always a Professional Workday:

Indigenous Day
Election Day
Lunar New Year
Orthodox Good Friday

Quarter Ends are always 1-2 PWs, with a total of 9 PWs during the year.

Spring Break is always 5 days.

So, the calendar really comes down to the start date and the calendar timing of Winter Break.

Number of 5 day weeks for the three upcoming years, since DCUM cares about that:

Blue: 26, 27, 25
Orange: 26, 26, 26
Green: 25, 25, 24
Purple: 25, 26, 25
