| OP here with a follow up. I've been getting a demi-permanent glaze on the gray. It starts to fade out and then I get it again- I think it'll end up every 6-8 weeks. Then when all of the permanent dye is grown out and cut off I'll let the glaze fade out completely. It's going well. I don't have that stark line anymore. |
OP, this is so timely. I was literally standing in the bathroom with a box of dye to do my roots yesterday, and just looking at my hair and the box and thinking "I don't want to do this anymore." I threw away the already mixed dye because I just want to be done. I know it's going to be a bit pain full to grow out the dyed/highlighted hair, but I think in the end I'll be happier with it. My hair is prone to brassiness anyway, so the highlights are hard for me to maintain -- I have to use special shampoo to combat the yellow/orange. But yes, the harsh line is the hardest part. I honestly think avoiding that line has been the main reason I've continued to dye my hair over the last three years -- I started seriously wanting to just let the gray show since Covid but have had trouble accepting the look of the dark roots with the gray streaks. I'm going to try a glaze and see how it goes. It's okay if it's not perfect. I just don't want the sharp line where my highlights start. I think I might actually need to do the glaze allover to blend the highlights with my roots/grays? If you have info on the color of the glaze you are using and how it is applied, I'd love to know more. |
I get it done at the salon. She’s careful about the color not being too warm since mine goes brassy easily too. |
Does she just do the roots or is it all over or strategic placement to blend highlights/grays/base color? |

OP, why not dye your hair at home?
I color my hair every 4 weeks with nutratint hair color. I saw it in WF first, but then decided to buy it wholesale (in bulk) online. Each box costs me only around $8-11. |

I’m 53 and have been bleached/highlighted/highlights/low lights/root touch up with my longtime hairstylist (I serve as one of her models on her SM) and in January, decided to go brunette.
Upkeep was getting to be way too time consuming and honestly, boring. I’m about 25 percent gray. My stylist did a combo of semi perm color and brunette dye. She left my long bangs alone so I have pretty subtle highlights peeking through. The plan is to return in 6 weeks. I love the look! |
