We're not in the HS bracket yet but 70% of the kids making D1 Travel at the 5-8th grades are AAU players.

Correct. He (I) is saying most of the girls on the freshmen teams were rec level and not FCYBL/AAU players.

I have boys and my oldest is a freshmen. Travel basketball boys were cut. I don’t know every kid who tried out but I have heard that soccer, basketball and baseball teams are full of travel/AAU kids. Boys, not girls. I don’t know about girls.

Travel basketball players were cut from our large FCPS HS freshman team.

Bball rosters are tiny and it is so body/athletic ability driven

You can hide more in almost any other sport due to

1. Roster size
2. Roles for not so athletic players

In areas like dmv, there is just way too much competition

You guys know this is a top 5 area for future nba talent. DMV bball is better than NYC basketball

Of course, but guessing the people kept were also AAU players.

Does anyone have a kid who plays sports other than basketball? Have a HS kid who is currently still playing football but also does basketball. Feels like he's behind when everyone else has been hooping it up for months.

The best athletes at DC's school are multis port. Where it gets harder is for the kid who is good but not great at multiple sports. That kid who may have made the team if they attended everything in the offseason, but probably isn't a starter will have a harder time showing up at tryouts coming off of football playoffs

The team is a mix of kids who played county, county + AAU, and 2 rec only players. For the boys 9th grade team. Not sure about the other grades.

Yes, and frankly this is most kids, but especially the football players, because football takes everyone and whatever they do during all those practices doesn't seem to involve a lot of running. Every season the football kids show up to basketball tryouts really out of cardio.

My son is currently playing on a travel team (8th grade) but I’m dreading him continuing on in high school. He attends a highly academically competitive high school. The practices and tournaments suck up a lot of time. Do boys have to play AAU all through high school to stay on their teams?
