Em Espey is the new Bethesda Beat MCPS reporter

Looks like we'll have to start all over again with a new reporter learning the lay of the land and building up their sources....That's a shame. Seems like they can't hold on to their education reporters for long at MoCo 360.

Here's the note Em included in her newsletter, "School Notes" today:

On a personal note, it’s with great bittersweetness that I let you know this is the last School Notes I will write, as Friday marks my last day with MoCo360.

I’ve accepted a position as the senior media relations manager for the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy research and advocacy organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. Reporting on MCPS this past year has been an adventure and an honor, and I wish I could personally go back and thank every single person who’s entrusted me with their story along the way. MoCo360 is committed to keeping you informed on all things local education, so please stay tuned and keep sending your thoughts and tips to the team by writing to editorial@moco360.media.

They were a very good reporter. It’s too bad that journalism is losing them to PR.

Seems like they don't hold on to their education reporters for long. I'm guessing the pay is not great.

Caitlynn was there for 6 years. That's a good run.

They weren't even here a whole year, were they?

Caitlynn is a hard act to follow. Em didn’t strike me as someone who would stick around from her behavior, so I’m not at all surprised.

Reporting on MCPS is a depressing job.

No great loss. To much lgbtq+ and not enough of everything or anything else. Also too much opinion (why would we care what she thinks?). Hopefully they get someone who is young and will stick around a while (like Caitlynn), and who is a good reporter!

Like Em or not, I am sure MCPS is thrilled there is no one covering them now while they try to sweep Beidelman under the rug. I am sorry to see a voice focused on MCPS go, and I still miss Caitlynn.

Your idea of balanced reporting would be that several hundred people show up to protest gay books and that’s not covered?

Pffft

Honestly, this sounds good all-around. It seems like Em would be better suited for, and probably more fulfilled in, a position with more of an advocacy role.

This exactly. Nearly every article made it seem like she wanted to be on the advocacy side, not objective reporting.
