My mom claims that my grandma made her ride the bus by herself when she was three years old

I have clear memories from age 3 AND I've had people tell me that some of the no-longer-acceptable things my 70s hippie mom did couldn't have possibly happened-but they did.

Yes, yes you do. You so remember everything from when you were 3 years old. Do you also remember being on Mars?

Just because you have no early memories does not mean that others don't. I have a few early and pre-school memories. I definitely remember getting immunization shots back in Asia and refusing to get my ears pierced because my older sister yelled from the pain (she went first). I also remember the kid from my lane who was affected by thalidomide and had his fingers growing out of his shoulder.

My dad walked 3 miles each way to school starting in kindergarten. However, on the way there he stopped at several family member houses to get a snack (sometimes a second breakfast) for his daily journey. When he got older he found shortcuts but starting at 5 he walked along the side of the ride.

NP - some people really can do this. It's one of the things that makes implanted memories more plausible. My kid, for example, has, unprompted, referenced a few things he did when we last visited my home country, and they were specific things that a child would've cared about (e.g his grandfather got him plastic toy tank, an event I barely remember myself); he was three at the time. My mother-in-law can reach back even further.

As for me, one of my earliest memories was my mom pointing out someone and saying "Look, it's your local-equivalent-of-a-kindergarten-teacher from last year!" and then having a pleasant chat with the lady. I would have sworn I had never seen that person before in all my life.

How old is your kid? I, too, remember being in the cellar when I was 2 (maybe....) we had back in Europe, and I looked out of the window at people searching for me all over the yard. It is vivid to me even now at 51. However, it is much different than a kid who is 6 remembering something from 3 than a 60-year-old remembering something when she was 3.
I have many memories from elementary school; I vividly remember an event when I was in 3rd grade, and many others, as for when I was three. Nope, that is just me creating memories based on stories I was told over and over and over again.
My mom, at 74, told me how grandma, her MIL claimed the ladder to our living room floor and yelled at her that she was a w*o*e! Then she remembered I told dad that mom was kissing a guy when it was just someone on TV! Funny, she never mentioned any of these "events in many previous decades. Funny thing memories, if you take recordings of oral history accounts from 4 different people observing and participating in the same event, all four stories will be very different.
OP's mom is no different. People love inventing stories, we are social creatures, and all our experiences shape what we "remember" and how we perceive things. OP posting this here is also telling. She is searching for something, but for what? An explanation as to why her mom is not caring? Why might her mom be a narcissist? Why does her mom nag and interfere? That your mom is a liar?
So what were you hoping to get from this post-op? To prove to your mom that you are not being overprotective when you don't let your 10-year-old take a school bus? Are you proving you are a better mom than your mom and grandma? That you are not creating kids that can't fend for themselves? We don't know, you might know, but possibly even you do not know, or at least do not wish to admit what you are looking for here.

There was a time when children learned to be independent early in life. I rode train from Philadelphia to Wash., DC by myself when I was ten. Back in the dark ages of the '70's, we made our own play dates.
