| You only have one child. How many times are you going to transport more than 2 additional kids? The third row doesn’t matter for you. If you have 3 kids the third row matters because you can’t even take one friend home after school or pick up one extra kid in a pinch/ for a favor unless you have a third row. |
|
Not the OP but we are a family of 3 looking for a third row for two scarios:
1) grandparents visit and cannot comfortably fit in our Forester; 2) we like to carpool to family events with another only-child family so we need 6 seat belts. That's not the majority of our driving but it's enough that renting a van is impractical. I want a hybrid and the options are pretty disappointing. |
| Highlander is amazing! Great car, third row works great for kids |
| 3 row is a flex that you have a big family. 3 row luxury truck is a flex that you have a big family and you’re rich. |
| Love the 2023 Tahoe! |
I always find the minivan cheerleaders annoying. There are many people who don't like or want a minivan. When people ask about options for SUV's, just move on to another thread. I'm not sure why so many minivan promoters keep telling SUV drivers who don't like minivans to try out minivans because we're missing out. I've rented a number of minivans over the years and driven ones my siblings had and ones that friends have. I have absolutely no interest in driving a minivan more than a week of vacation once a year. So, when I say that I don't want a minivan and want to discuss options for SUVs, stop with the suggestions to try a minivan. It's not an option and it's not a helpful suggestion, it's just a waste of time, both yours and mine. |
I'm not the PP, but OP mentioned 3 row "cars" and didn't initially specify interest in SUVs only. If the reason for needing three rows is to regularly transport people, a minivan is the best option. |
| Can the Highlander with 2nd row bench seating fit three comfortably? Can the third row fit teens? |
Not my teens. I would have loved to buy a Highlander but we've had Pilots instead. The overall length is an inch or two shorter than the Highlander but the interior space is much more useable. I've stuffed 6 or 7 tall teenage boys in the Pilot. |
I so wish the Pilot came in a hybrid |
The only comparable SUVs to minivans for passenger space are Suburbans, Sequoias, and similar behemoths. If you don't actually need a third row, a highlander is great, if you do, they aren't |
| OP here: looks like the Toyota agrand Highlander is it. |

I have a Highlander and LOVE it.
I (fairly petite woman) personally sat in the third row once, and yes, it was totally uncomfortable. But my ES kids and their friends sit back there all the time and say it’s plenty roomy. Once you have more than one kid in ES and activities, you carpool A LOT. I love that I can fit 5 kids in my car (we have captains seats in the middle which actually makes it much easier to access the third row). We don’t keep the third row up when it’s just us - we use the space for hauling around stuff, sports equipment, dog, whatever… |

Highlander 3rd row is awful for adults. I sat in one this week in an UberXL. Im a 5’11” 175 pound man and I had to sit sideways to fit in the 3rd row.
It was fine for our 20 minute Uber ride, but not for road-trips. |
Why in the world would you get a minivan with one child? I have 4 kids and would never consider one. The times we have been stuck w/ one as a rental have been miserable. They drive terribly and park horribly. Look at Audi, Vw, Volvo, Landrover, ford, Tesla. |
