I have noticed a lot of stores now start that work 30 minutes prior so they can actually walk out at closing time; they do not want to be ringing up a line of people at closing time, they want to be gone.

It's not just mall stores or those with teen employees.

Customers will come in 5 minutes before closing and leave a mess behind. I saw it over and over again in retail.

+100, It hasn't made financial sense in a long time to be open extended hours for brick and mortar businesses and yet a certain segment of society gets SO ANGRY that this is the case but they really aren't a big enough population to support staying open that late!

I was at Tysons corner yesterday with my daughter. I saw at least two stores closed with a sign saying out to lunch. To me the indicates a staffing shortage. I would be surprised if the mall fines stores because if they do the stores would probably try to find another location

Tyson's Corner is dying! Cheap stores and no real anchors. Good riddance!

How soon until some stores there are closed for days at a time with signs like this posted at the store entrance?

I have also seen many stores not open on time at Tysons. I assume lack of employees or late employees. I never go at closing but I would not be surprised if they couldn’t cover the closing shift.

They don't give a fart about you wanting to buy more little shits for yourself that you don't really need.
They have beers to drink, pot to smoke, parties to go to, etc.
If you no likey, buy more doodads for yourself online.

That is embarrassing especially for a higher end shopping mall such as Tysons.

Tysons sucks ass. That shit is going downhill like the rest of that shithole area...

None of them have any remotely interesting personal lives. When they are off they just stare at their phones. They even stare at their phones when they are at work and are supposed to be working.

Like your life is so interesting spending hours at a mall buying junk you don't need.

If the store serves as an ‘anchor’ to the mall or has a main entrance to the mall, they get double fined for closing early. Or opening late

Staff shortages are less likely to be an issue with their opening and closing because they have a larger pool than the stores that run with just a couple of people at a time.

If I’m trying to shop after work and on the night when my kids don’t have an activity or I don’t have evening work commitments, it can be almost impossible or take weeks of hit-or-miss attempts. There are plenty of things that aren’t easily ordered online or offer free in-store returns but expensive return shipping. I miss the pre-Covid hours.

We were recently in a part of Asia with a huge mall culture and stores were open until 9:30-10:00 pm even on weekend nights. It was more convenient to go to *another continent* for my usual cosmetics stock-up and the kids’ back-to-school shopping than to go to my walkable-from-home, massive outdoor shopping center in the US.

Kids in Asia don't behave like wild animals. They have more self control and less assholish antisocial behavior.

We can't have nice things in America because the populace are low class, low IQ heathens.

+1 I don’t think Macy’s or Nordstrom is going to close early, but the random small specialty stores might. I also noticed that stores open later these days. If you get to the mall when it first opens at 10 am or whatever, a fair few stores will still be closed until 11.

If they would be the only one in the store come closing time due to staffing issues, then yes, I think they should close early when at least 2 people are there. They don't make the schedules and they don't do the hiring. Yes, it sucks but you can order online and have it shipped.

What if there was an emergency? Or they had a bathroom mishap? Don't be so vicious unless you know what's going on

They won't close early but good luck finding a sales associate to help you after peak hours...as many others have said, it's a staffing issue. Stores simply cannot attract/retain sufficient staff, and only certain staff (managers) can close the store out at night. Go earlier, OP - this is an entirely predictable dilemma.

Can the stores receive a fine from mall management for not honoring mall hours?
