What is HD?

I don't love all the flavors -- some just have way too much going on and can be too sweet -- but the Darkest Chocolate is the standard against which all chocolate ice creams should be measured.

I also appreciate that it's a small(ish) business, woman-owned, and uses grass-grazed dairy, as opposed to Haagen Dazs owned by Nestle (boo hiss). I do appreciate that HD is one of the only brands available (including way too many pricey brands!) with at least a number of flavors that aren't full of food gums, though. It's almost impossible to find an ice cream at any price point that's not loaded with guar/locust bean.

I'll put up McConnell's Vanilla Bean as my standard for vanilla.

Have you tried Dolcezza dark chocolate gelato? That's my local favorite chocolate, but I haven't tried Jeni's. Curious how it compares.

I bought the darkest chocolate and I was not impressed! I also got the salted caramel. I find them ok but won't buy them again.

Savannah Buttermint is ridiculous- so good for a mint lover. It’s an ice cream version of those wedding mints from my childhood.

I need to try the popcorn one- That sounds good too!

HD = Haagen Daz (however it is spelled).

Jenni’s was okay but for us Graeter’s is the pinnacle. Can order online or get several flavors at Balducci’s. At the holidays, the peppermint stick is the best! Real bits of peppermint stick.

Read this thread and went to Target and noticed the Jenni's ice cream on sale so picked up a pint of the Brambleberry. Ugh! and I even like that kind of ice cream generally. But way too sweet and just more like a mouthful of jam. maybe their other flavors are better. They are supposed to open a store in Shirlington sometime soon.

I do love Graeter's! Those chocolate chips are amazing. Does Balducci's carry the peppermint stick? That's my favorite flavor, so I'll be sure to keep an eye out. Moorenko's peppermint stick is great, too.

That said, I love the various fruit flavors that Jeni's has. Brambleberry Crisp, Peach Cobbler, Lemon Blueberry Streusel... I can love different brands for different flavors.

You can buy Graeter’s at the supermarket. I wasn’t impressed.

An east coaster relocated to Ohio - our ice cream game makes up for all the other midwest white foods
(Team Graeters for the record)

For us, too! Graeter's is so creamy and the chips are on a whole different level. Wegman's carries a decent variety of flavors, as does Henry's Sweet Retreat in Bethesda.

It's quirky! The best store bought is the one with the fewest ingredients, by the brand who perfected high-end store bought ice cream.

Lol someone from HD is posting on this thread. Literally nobody else would be promoting that hard

Not at all. When HD is on sale for 2 for $6 or $7 it is a steal. Jeni's is always 1 for $8 to $12. Jeni's is not 2x to 4x as good the classic HDs e.g. vanilla bean, rum raisin. I don't think it's as good even if they were the same price.

Note: I am not a fan of the newer HDs with all the weird Ben & Jerry's-esque mix-ins.

NP here. Most store bought sweets for me see too bland, too sweet, or both. I agree that HD is some of the best store bought ice cream. I also like some of the Tillamook flavors. I’ve tried several flavors of Jeni’s and wasn’t impressed.
