I bought Jen's cookbook on how to make ice cream. It's well written.

The only problem is now I know she uses a cream cheese base to make ice cream.

I don’t understand, why is a cream cheese base a problem?

Because then it is not really ice cream anymore, but a milk based dessert. It's advertised as a special ice cream, when it is really just a regular dessert.

I don't love all the flavors -- some just have way too much going on and can be too sweet -- but the Darkest Chocolate is the standard against which all chocolate ice creams should be measured.

I also appreciate that it's a small(ish) business, woman-owned, and uses grass-grazed dairy, as opposed to Haagen Dazs owned by Nestle (boo hiss). I do appreciate that HD is one of the only brands available (including way too many pricey brands!) with at least a number of flavors that aren't full of food gums, though. It's almost impossible to find an ice cream at any price point that's not loaded with guar/locust bean.

I'll put up McConnell's Vanilla Bean as my standard for vanilla.

Have you tried Dolcezza dark chocolate gelato? That's my local favorite chocolate, but I haven't tried Jeni's. Curious how it compares.

I tried the brown butter brittle and didn't love it. It is waay too sweet. It would be fewer calories just having candied nuts because it tasted like an off flavored vanilla with candied nuts.

I think the cinnamon roll was also too sweet but does taste like a cinnamon roll.

I kind of like the Boston Cream but the best was the Butterscotch Popcorn.

Huh? I don't understand this line of thinking. But I've also only had one of her vegan ice creams - the lemon bar flavor (summer limited edition) - and it was really good.

I’m not the PP, but responding to your comment- Ice cream has a regulatory definition- had to have a certain amount of fat, otherwise it’s not ice cream:

My kids looooove the milkiest chocolate - wish they carried in grocery stores and not just the dark chocolate.

And Jeni's qualifies. I think PP just wanted to seem really savvy.

For... certain flavors, you mean?

There’s a small amount of cream cheese in her standard base, along with corn starch. I think it’s to help with the texture. We don’t buy often but do use her recipes when we make our own, and at least for homemade I do think her recipe produces superior results. We also use her frozen yogurt recipe.

The HD posts are weird bc I think Ben and Jerry’s actually has the best vanilla ice cream!

This comment makes no sense bc the jenis ice cream base uses just a small amount of cream cheese and a ton of milk and cream. Under any regulatory definition of ice cream, it certainly qualifies:

Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
4 teaspoons cornstarch
1 1/2 ounces cream cheese softened/room temperature
1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
1 1/4 cups heavy cream
2/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup

Ice cream fans may want to listen to a good business podcast on the history/war between Ben & Jerry’s and HD. It’s on Business Wars.
