I’m an American who has lived all over the world. I don’t get the American obsession with flying flags at random times not associated with major holidays (like July 4 or Memorial Day) or year-round. It’s just not that common elsewhere.

If you've been all of the world then you probably recognize that there's not much else to unite very different groups of people together. Civic nationalism is the glue that holds very different groups together in this country.
