I heard it was extended through July. As a PP mentioned, or maybe it was diff FCPS post, the rules bend/don't apply for a select few at Gatehouse. I don't see it as bailing. 10 years ago, yes, it was bailing. The current job, political, and FCPS climates do not support the work family atmosphere that used to make getting a job at FCPS a good thing. (Benefits are still good.)The great pensions for teachers and staff are gone, along with loyalty and longevity. Leadership keeps adding more layers, spends much time working to justify and protect their jobs and departments, remains largely unaccountable for their decisions and actions. Not sure Dr. Reid has the energy to deal with rogue leadership, and not sure that is what the SB wants her to do. SB wants someone to pet them, support dog parks, hold their hands and explain a $3.4 BILLION budget to them for the umpteenth time, and answer all their parent calls because they can't/won't. |
The transfer window closed 6/24. No extensions into July -at least not for lowly teachers. |
Isn’t Falls Church City in a different school district altogether? If so, the benefits and pay may be better. |
Yes, and a pretty homogenous community in terms of SES, a PTA with $$$$, a school that is better funded and has more resources, so it's going to be a MUCH easier job. It's probably a principal's dream job, and wouldn't be surprised if they live in the community already. FCC likes to hire from within its own community. Most of the people I know that teach there also live there (we live just outside the border in fairfax county, literally our across the street neighbors are in FCC). |
You really don’t know much about how schools operate. First, a Title 1 school such a Beech Tree has more resources than one knows what to do with. There’s this myth that only schools with wealthy PTAs have resources. If anything, she may be surprised by what the school doesn’t have. And second, it is not a principal’s dream job to work with entitled, demanding parents that are not in short supply these days. The wealthier the community, the higher the probability of encountering them. She’s going to have to listen to parents go nuts over a bus arriving late or a teacher looking at their snowflake the wrong way and wonder when can she get back to doing her real job of leading a school. That is a nightmare. |
Pretty much none of the principals or assistant principals at FCC schools lived in FCC when they were hired and the number of teachers who live in FCC are a minority. |
The Mt. Daniel principal definitely lived in FCC before he was hired- I don't know about anyone else. I know in the calendar discussions that Dr. Noonan said that a plurality of FCC teachers lived in FCC. |
| As a parent at BTES, I am sad to see Ms. Daugherty go, but I hold no ill will. As others have said, I'm not sure when the "right" time is for everyone here? I do not work in schools, but to a degree, this seems like the best time to leave? She has worked through class assignments, teacher hiring, and everything that needs to be done in the summer. If a principal leaves at the end of the year, they are leaving the next principal to wade through one of the heavier parts of administration, which is getting everything ready for the following year. |

She seems lovely and sounds like she will be a great fit at Oak Street Elementary and very happy to be there.

You sound like a reasonable person! Thank you for this POV. |
+1 A principal leaving during the school year without a good reason and a back-up plan might be considered "bailing." A principal leaving after doing the heavy lifting of setting up the school year is being very responsible. She will probably have to do some patch-up work in the new school if her predecessor didn't do the same for her. There's probably someone internal to BTES that will step up. |
I don’t know many who live there. She will now have to work with Noonan. Anyone who thinks her job is easy does not know him. |
And he was a principal in FCPS before coming to Mt Daniel. |
He can be difficult but I think he'll really like her. |
This is interesting to me. I am a FCCPS parent and I find Noonan really obnoxious- and in apparent need of constant adulation from the school board and others. I had the impression, however, that he was good to work for..... |
