The ACT. Is a little low

Maybe South Carolina, auburn, nc state,

Vandy is bigger than Wake and, unless OP's kid can throw or catch a ball with great skill, reach is charitable for both. UNC is also a huge reach unless in state. Auburn, Clemson, Bama and UT-Knoxville might be good fits.

The state schools Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Clemson and Ole Miss will have a similar feel and enrollment but will be lower cost at 45-50k out of state. UT and UF are not only harder to get into OOS but they are much bigger schools enrollment wise.

I bet OP’s son could get merit aid at Baylor, SMU and/ or TCU. SMU and TCU have a ton of money and with their “rich kid” reputations, they may struggle to diversify as much as some other schools. And Baylor being in the middle of flat nowhere, they probably also have to work harder for diversity. Baylor’s Baptist culture is a bit conservative for my tastes, but SMU (it’s actually mostly secular despite their loose affiliation with a liberal Methodist denomination) and TCU have a wider range since they are in cities.
