This is misleading. OSSE specifically allowed any school to close for up to 2 weeks in January to deal with surge related staffing shortages. Stokes took advantage of that policy and reopened when the 2 weeks were up. I was critical of Stokes' decision, but to say they were forced to reopen is quite a stretch. |
Equity = because reasons |
| When your anxiety manifests as white saviorism. |
Sorry. But this is as silly and sick as the schools still requiring masks. At this point, we should be supporting choice. If a parent has reason to think mitigation comes above all else, trust them. If a parent is ready to drop mitigation and accept some risk, trust them. |
Lol at equity. |
| And what about those kids with disabilities that are worsened by masking and social distancing? Maybe we should outright ban masking to ensure equity for them? No? |
| ITDS hasn't given us their policy for this school year but I am really hoping for mask optional. I have been a big supporter of masks in the past but everyone who wants to be is now fully vaccinated and I do feel like further masking is going to take a social and educational toll. |
Yup, same here. I've been saying for months just look outside DC at just about any other "blue" areas, and you'll hardly see anyone wearing a mask anywhere ever. To think about requiring masks on school kids in teh fall is utterly laughable. |
Same for me. You have to leave the DMV to realize how anomalous these policies really are. It's like we've gotten into a self-perpetuating anxiety loop and can't get off. COVID isn't going anywhere and I highly doubt the treatments and vaccines will be markedly better in a year from now. Unless the plan is to mask forever, schools need to stop sending out surveys and just define an off-ramp to get kids back to normalcy. This is YEARS of their childhoods at this point. |
Definitely what I saw in Boston last Spring. I wish the educators here realized just how far outside they mainstream they are. Truly a joke. |
| KIPP and Washington Global are mask optional. |
We are high on the waitlist and I am hoping they announce one way or another before we get a spot (if we do) because it will be a determinative factor for us. We are in a DCPS and intend to send DC without a mask this year (masked all last year, even after they lifted the mandate, because it was clear the teacher would have been uncomfortable with it). We'd like to move to ITDS within the next few years, but if they do a mask mandate this year, it's not hard enough to get into for us to opt in. We have a few years and the stats for mid-elementary waitlists are favorable to us. Also do not want our child to start a new school in a mask. |
Truly ridiculous. Like SNL-skit/VEEP-episode/Portlandia ridiculous. |
I agree and wish they would all just announce. People are now making decisions based on this. Many of us don't want to be in a mask mandated environment any longer. |
Welcome to the charter system in DC. They have a waitlist and do not care a bit about whether you take the seat or not. Your leverage is exactly zero. |
