Would you report a gross independent coffee shop barista?

I ordered an espresso to go. I gave her a $5 bill and said keep the change ($2). So she touched the screen barehanded, then takes my cash and gets change barehanded. Then a customer behind me wants a fill up of ice or something. So she takes his used cold cup and tops it off with ice. Still barehanded and hasn’t washed her hands. Then she gets to my espresso with the same barehands and didn’t wash.

And obviously I have no idea what she did prior to my arrival, possible she’s been going cash register to making drinks all day.

Would you send an email to a manager and/or report them to local health dept?

You'd complain if it took her ten minutes to make your espresso because she had to wash her hands five times, too. She didn't touch any food, only the outside of cups. What are you worried about?

For OP and PPs who don’t think OP is totally nuts: do you ever travel? If you do travel, do you go anywhere besides a few hermetically sealed resorts?

I cannot imagine having this level of anxiety and traveling. I love to travel and go all over the world whenever I can, and I can’t see how you could ever travel.

She held my cup and pushed down the top of my cup with the same bare unwashed hands which were handling money, a dirty screen, and some random stranger's used cup. And presumably even worse long prior to my arrival. It's nasty. She shouldn't be handling or recycling used cups, period.

I can't imagine having the mental energy to pay attention to this kind of thing. It wouldn't phase me one bit.

+100. The OP must be so exhausted and exhausting. I feel sorry for someone who is this uptight.

It's not uptight. It's smart. Most people are dumb as doorposts and think basic hygiene is just too hard to do or worry about. They are the lower classes for a reason.

OP is ~~high klass~~

And you -- are not.

Ma’am are you calling me a dirty pot?

The more I read the recent responses, OP, the more convinced I am that the barista has found the thread. Skip calling the owners and just call the Health Department directly.

I don’t know how you could do much of anything. Eating out, going to the pool or the ocean, owning a pet, going to a movie theater- so much would be out.

Not the barista, but thinks OP is a nutter. I (and clearly others in this thread) sincerely do not understand how anyone could think anything of the situation. I genuinely fail to understand what's gross or concerning, except... cooties?

I mean, do you understand the world around you? Restaurants? Stores? Stops? Eating at other people's homes? This is a non issue and utterly unbelievably totally benign. Paying attention to this level of inane detail in in the first place, clearly points to OP having issues.

And enjoying the best food when you travel - yummy street food!!! OP would have a heart attack!

How do you ever travel? Do you travel? Genuine question.

x1000 This is what you need to do, OP. The barista needs to be trained in safe food handling processes. Her actions, as you described in your OP, violated several processes that are supposed to keep customers safe from illness.

Yeah, I think of some of the spectacular food experiences I’ve had while traveling and if OP is worried about this, OP could never have managed street food around the world. What a sad life.

Same question for you: do you ever travel? How do you manage?

Pot, meet kettle.

It's not a violation to handle money and then touch cups without washing. It's also not a violation to handle money and then touch food IF you are using tongs.

If touching food with bare hands, yes, that's a violation.

Yes, you'd have to be neurotic not to eat it.

Yup. Stay at home watching fear mongering, exaggerated videos and reading scary scary articles about germs. That sounds like a great way to live your life. Thrilling. So enjoyable.
