no uniform approach is the more "traditional" one in the history of public education in the U.S. And some of the best independent schools like St. Albans have relaxed, if more formal, dress codes--shirts (could even be polka dot) w ties, or turtlenecks, shorts on hot days, etc.
The current trend is more casual and comfortable clothes, and that's likely here to stay. That's a good thing too! No one cares about having the latest Canada Goose jacket anymore.
