Why don’t more teens carry Narcan?

Anonymous
Um no, it's not a child's responsibility to carry and use Narcan.

I’d appreciate it if most everyone would carry exactly one .25 mg of Xanax, liquid Benadryl, a rescue inhaler or even Primatene Mist (with a disposable chamber), an EpiPen, Diastat (I’m PP who mentioned this), Glucagon, Advil, tissues, band aids AND Narcan.

PSA: get trained in CPR. Carry your CPR card AND a plastic mouth shield.

Carry some frosting (cup cake frosting) too. It is easier to administer to people than a tablet and it melts faster in mouth.

Good point. If we can't do everything then we should just do nothing. You are very logical and smart.

Are you always so myopic and self-centered? It's about other people, not you.

Doing drugs is about as self-centered as it gets.

There was a guy who collapsed on the sidewalk within view from where I was passing by. I called for an ambulance and was ready to pull out narcan but the EMTs got there quick.

I think this is the problem with it. No matter how much we want to help, we truly have no idea what people collapse from most of the time, unless there is someone nearby to give you information, you see the dope or needle or whatever, or unless you have some medical training.

This. If I see someone collapse on the sidewalk I'm calling 911. Maybe then look for a medical alert bracelet and see if I can help in some way. I am in no way qualified to render first aid. A drug OD would not even occur to me in the moment. No way would I expect my teen to be able to assess and figure out medical treatment for a random stranger.

Agree wholeheartedly, and agree with earlier poster who said it's too big of responsibility for a non_EMT teen. Mind knows how to call 911 and that's all that's needed.

+1.

Your kid has a cell phone I assume and knows how to dial 911.

I am still getting my older teen to remember to carry their own personal epi-pen, to save their own life.

I don't think I'd want anyone relying on my kid to save their life, likely they would be unprepared.

But I support having easy access to Narcan in many settings, not sure if having everyone carry it around is the best solution, having it available in every setting for emergencies (like having a fire extinguisher) seems more workable.

I'm not putting that on my minor child. Adults can carry it around, though, or as a PP said, have it more available generally. Like with the AED.

I haven't been with someone who OD'd, but I know at least a dozen people who have died of overdoses over several decades. I know that some of them were not alone when they died. Narcan may have saved them.

Perhaps re evaluate your friend circle. I know NO ONE who has even come close to Od'ing.

I guess you think rich people and suburban teens don't die of OD's because you have your head so far up your elitist arse you can't see reality.

Bless your heart, you must be a good such a good Christian that you would never take drugs, you numb yourself with wine like Jesus did. Amen and Amen!

And tampons, condoms and the morning after pill, just in case.

Or we could just all keep staying by ourselves inside.

A lot of the deaths are teens, who are around other teens, but you don't hear about it on the news. Don't think these drugs aren't in your kids schools.

Fairfax County Health Department data show that there were 94 drug overdoses deaths in 2020, 87 of which involved fentanyl.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s early data, drug overdose deaths for the time period of May 2020 and April 2021 increased 22.5% in Virginia to 2,034 deaths; 20.6% in Maryland to 2,863, and 10.7% in DC to 498.
