Anyone else grossed out by cakes and especally cupcakes with way too much frosting?

Only the frosting on cheap store cupcakes. You know, the kind that usually has airbrushed rainbow coloring on it. Real buttercream I could eat with a spoon.

One thing you can do is rip off the bottom of the cupcake and put it on the top of the frosting so you have a sandwich of sorts. Makes the amount of frosting not so gross.

Agree. I can do without the cake if that makes it seem less gluttonous. I don’t like Costco frosting but love Georgetown Cupcakes.

I hate the overly sweet American frosting, usually full of artificial coloring and preservatives anyway, so yes, it's disgusting.

Now if I make my own frosting, or eat something made fresh by a really good bakery that doesn't make it too sweet, that's a different story!

WTF is "American frosting"? In most countries isn't frosting made with some combination of butter and/or shortening and sugar? If not, what recipe is your favorite from this "non-American" place?

There are actually different types of frostings. American buttercream is made with butter, cream, powdered sugar, and flavorings (such as vanilla). It tends to be a bit sweeter than Italian buttercream or Swiss buttercream, which are more like meringues, or German buttercream, which has a custard base.

FWIW, to me a cupcake is merely a frosting delivery vehicle.

+1 I grew up in Germany and our cakes are were not super sweet and usually dry. And we were obsessed with American brownies and cookies. DCUM is so deeply offended by American culinary stereotypes, but the truth is that most countries love American desserts (including frosting!) because they are delicious!

Give it to me. I would eat a whole bowl of frosting, given no consequences.

The worst tasting everything! All the baked goods were really dried out. At least that's what I remember from the last time I ate there in like 2008.

I don't buy any cakes or cupcakes, since they are junky and not even tasting good. I bake my own when I can. Otherwise, I just don't bother.

Yes. I have a sweet tooth and still hate frosting. Give me a plain cake any day.

Same. Plus I prefer a Swiss buttercream or Italian meringue buttercream.

The majority of bakeries, even the “nice” ones are using margarine and shortening. No thanks.
