He means well and is a smart guy. I do worry about who advises him and about all the new hiring for central office. Plus the fact so many in upper management have left and been replaced with outsiders who come from districts very different from ours. I still would give him a chance and have him stay to show what he can do under normal circumstances. |
Oh, and remember the aids who had been teaching special needs kids in person for months who ended up at the end of the line because they released slots during school hours? |
That’s a little extreme. Did she have at least one shot? I was on it, and I was fully vaxxed before going back. |
I like him, but I will concede that their are WAY too many central office admin positions. I would trade a bunch of them for teachers. The circumstances have indeed, been unusual. |
“There” are! |
I agree. That was bad. I also understand that he is the head of a large organization, and coordinating that may not have been something he did personally. |
You people are truly nuts. He didn’t run the vaccine program. The county did. The public health department. A teacher crying during a parent teacher conference about having to return to in-person work without a vaccine after half the world had done so months ago just sums it up though. Totally inappropriate on every freaking level. |
APS teacher here- Dr Duran is great. He is demonstrating that he is committed to retaining good teachers and he is repeatedly shown that he is hearing feedback from teachers loud and clear. He has an impossible job with some of the toughest parents in the DMV. He is never going to make everyone happy and of course, in hindsight, APS should have handled certain aspects of the pandemic differently. But he is an intelligent, compassionate and forward-thinking guy. I don’t think it’s fair to tear him down before he has gotten a chance to focus on things besides Covid. |
It was decided in August 2020 that virtual school for all grades was going to be the solution to the pandemic and here we are in 2022 where we are still fretting over whether school will go virtual again. No differentiation in planning contingencies for the pre-k to 2nd and special needs students vs. older kids. Actually we haven’t had much communicated to us at all about how possible staffing shortages will be handled. I fully expect APS to be caught with its pants down and canceling school with 12 hours notice with no plan in place. I’m not sure how any of this is forward thinking. |
Like students? |

I agree but still think he should be fired for not firing Loft. |
Duran is not responsible for VDH putting a shot in your arm. |
I hated the position teachers were put in, but this is nonsense and unprofessional. Sobbing to a parent in a conference? Good lord. |
Duran is not fretting; YOU/parents are fretting. |
