| What do you thnk the new rate will be? When is it announced? |
I think I read 6.47%- so still pretty good. |
Guess y'all are only going to get 6% then back down to 1-2%. Still not a bad way to save $10 from inflation. |
You are asking why human being procrastinate? Is that a real question? |
Buy them through your brokerage. |
I actually was not well informed about I bonds - my bad as I should have done research. Only read about it recently and missed the deadline yesterday. Some people are trying at the last minute as we didn't know and still learning. The website not working did not help - could not get through. I wish they gave till October 31 to buy regardless of how long it takes them to process. |
| If you buy today will it be issued as Nov 1? |
Yes. Not enough time to get the current rate. But the new rate is still good and there’s a possibility that the fixed rate will be higher than 0. |
Ha! Still got 9%, issue date 10/1/2022, cash was taken from my bank account on 10/31/22. So, 10/28/22 deadline was for scheduling the purchase, not the settlement date. Yey. Learned something new today PS rate didn't really matter, my plan was to put money in I-Bond in October regardless. |
| The new rate has a fixed component of 0.4% that will stay with the purchase for 30 years. Consensus is that 3 years is the break-even point between the 9% vs the 6% purchase after which the new bond would have been a better purchase.. |
I don't know where you saw that "consensus" but the analysis I've seen from TIPS watcher and the bogleheads board suggests the break even is more like 8 years, although I think it depends a bit on assumptions about future inflation because one bond will be ahead of the other in inflation adjustments. |
