….because there are some state schools that are worth a premium and many private schools that are not. |
| I graduated from Mizzou. The journalism school is amazing and even more, the alumni connections aka the Mizzou mafia. I worked in print journalism for years at newpapers and magazines and transitioned into PR. I absolutely love Mizzou. It's a big research I institute. It's a beautiful campus and fun town. Lots of outdoor spaces and outdoorsy things like caves, hiking, running trails. Cost of living can't be beat. Columbia is a cool little town. If you like sports or Greek life, that is big there. It's also cool if you don't like those things and you will find your people. It is a really special place. |
| Oh and at Mizzou you work for an actual newspaper and NBC affiliate. That is really valuable when you apply for jobs. I was a Dow Jones news fellow and worked at a newspaper and actually went to grammar camp. |
Cuse grad here- sorry your education was average- mine was great- and loved the campus and vibe! |
Off the top of my head…. Ted Koppel Megyn Kelly (yuck) Bob Costas Lou Reed Joyce Carol Oates Alice Sebold (in the new lately) Dick Clark |
If we're talking about full pay at Syracuse vs full pay at some random state school then, no, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And there are many more private schools even better than Syracuse. |
|
Which privates are better than Syracuse for journalism? |
Northwestern. Columbia for grad school. |
I also forgot Joe Biden! |
|
Maybe go to one of the state school options for undergrad and if still interested in journalism attend/apply to Newhouse for grad school. Save money up front and the grad degree from Syracuse allows you to tap into the Newhouse network.

| state school |
| I would focus on applying to a good state flagship over syracuse (UVA,UMD,UNC, etc.) |
USC, UW Madison, and UT Austin are some of the best colleges for journalism |
| Why won't this thread die? Why do people keep adding onto this list? |
