Why is Wilson's college counselor out the week applications are due?

That’s great to hear.

It is great. If I were the parent of a senior, I would be “frustrated” so I don’t want to minimize difficulties these seniors face at a critical juncture.

But I am often so impressed by the dedication and energy of Wilson faculty and staff.

I'm the PP- I certainly do not want to minimize the stress that all those students endured...I just wanted to give credit where credit is due and highlight the (many) Wilson staff that came to the rescue as opposed to focusing solely on the one staff that caused the problem.

Oh well. People quit. It happens. He probably received a better offer for more money in a non education environment.

We can’t have threads that complain about school staff quitting in the same place people spent a year calling people lazy and telling them to quit so someone better could take their job

If school staff are quitting because of anonymous comments on the internet, they're the weakest, softest fools around.

Are you insane? Do you have ANY idea how strong you have to be to teach in a public school? Maybe untested new teachers haven’t yet built up their muscle but anyone who’s been around the school block a few times is tough as hell.

Wasn't saying that's why they left. Just pointing out that the common theme on here has been: go ahead and quit, you are replaceable

The college counselor abruptly leaving is very concerning in that this is not happening in a vacuum. Teachers are not coming to work, there still is no physics teacher, there are few subs, grades are not being updated, student behavior is atrocious. A couple weeks ago there was a student who was bullied online and in school and he was scared to walk through the halls bc he was being threatens. The students know this… but parents do not so nothing is being done.

As for the college counselor, this person was recently hired and could not make it even to ED and EA application submission. What is happening in this school that a person coming from the outside cannot even make it six months to help kids submit college applications?

The general consensus is that “oh, it’s bc of the pandemic and virtual learning is to blame.” I disagree, there’s more to this. There are not enough classes bc 4x4 and the classes are packed with students. Teachers are overworked and overwhelmed. Some of the behavior in the school by kids is completely unacceptable and there should be consequences.

I don’t understand why parents haven’t picked up on this dysfunction, or if they are aware, why aren’t more parents speaking out?

I'm with you 100 percent on this, although I had no idea about the bullying. There is a teacher who hasn't shown up for about half the classes (she teaches two AP classes) and no one seems to care. No one says anything. Meanwhile the kids aren't learning anything.

+ 100 Complete chaos. And central office couldn’t care less. I doubt they even have any idea what is going on inside school buildings

What can parents do to get changes?

Still no physics teacher for AP Physics C? Did the physics teacher on maternity leave return?

Regarding the 4x4 schedule, I encourage people to complain directly to downtown....to Ferrebee's office (ceo.info@k12.dc.gov) and the deputy mayor for education (dme@dc.gov)...the more people they hear from, the better....it is NOT set in stone that this schedule is permanent and it was not Wilson's decision (in fact, Wilson opposed it).

The staff vacancies is a trickier issue--nationwide teacher shortage--as is the issue of bullying...I'd email the principal and ask what is being done about both. Also contact the LSAT...these are issues they should be able to respond to.

What happens to these kids? I assume they now have to take the class in the spring?

Every school is doing it. Otherwise what grade can you give? An I looks bad and the class is on their transcript. Kids get credit all the time for classes where they don’t learn anything.
