Is it worth paying and waiting for installation or is this something one can do oneself or with general handyman?
It was 100% worth paying someone to do it. He was done in 30 minutes. It would've taken DH the whole day, a case of beer, $20 in the swear jar, and it wouldn't look as nice.
Use in-store help to plan it out and then install yourself.
The installation isn't that expensive. Totally worth it for me to know things were done right, level, etc.
I'm moderately handy and have had no trouble installing Elfa. It does take time - measure lots, have a good level, etc. But it's do-able. (I probably wouldn't let my DH near the task!)
I'm a dw and it took me 3-4 hrs. It's not that hard. You have to read the manual and know how to find your studs. I've installed tons of these over the years.
The hardest part is finding the studs to install the top bracket. Once that top bracket is in place, everything else pretty much just snaps into place.
I DIY'd Elfa closet in my future kiddo's nursery. Did it myself, 25 weeks pregnant and it took me no longer than 2 hours. Looks fantastic! Maybe for bigger projects it makes sense to hire someone, but I found it super easy. I've also assembled Ikea's most complicated furniture and get some weird enjoyment out of it, but that's just me.
There is only 1 step that needs a little work and that is finding out where the studs are to drill your first two holes. Everything even easier after that. If you can follow directions to put together a basic piece of furniture, you can install the Elfa shelves.
I've had no problems installing Elfa by myself. I have a good drill and screw gun and it goes so fast (if you can't hit studs, buy the drywall, self drilling hangers). The last one I did was huge and took under an hour. It took longer to take all the stickers off than to install.
|
FYI--You don't even need studs. There's a special type of butterfly anchor that you can use on drywall.
Anyway, it takes some patience, but yes, you can totally do ELFA yourself if you have the time and tools (i.e., a drill and level). |

I've installed several Elfa closets myself (I'm a female) and it is so easy that I'd never spend the money for someone else to install it! All you're really installing is the top rail, everything else hangs off of it.
|
I've installed several as well, including a whole wall of a garage. If I were doing a whole room I might get help, but otherwise it's a pretty simple process (which is kind of the point of Elfa, it's all adjustable once you put in the top rail).
My husband did it and said it was super easy. He's not really into DIY but offers to help anyone with Elfa so it can't be too bad.
It's really easy. I've installed a bunch of these myself in all sorts of configurations. I can't believe anyone anyone would waste their money on install. I assume you also employ someone to wipe your asses.
