Does anyone know of any practices that can provide sedation for pelvic exams?

Are you inquiring about sedation for a pap smear or any symptomatic gynecological problem?

No sorry, try some Ativan.

Sedation for an routine pelvic exam is an overkill. Ask your doctor for Ativan or Xanax and take it an hour before your Pap smear.

What do Ativan or Xanax do, do they relax the muscles? That's my problem. I am sorry to sound so ignorant...

Anti-anxiety. It keeps you calm and relaxed so that you don't freak out during the exam. Take deep slow breaths during your exam and you'll do just fine.

Is Vaginismus your issue, OP?

Is this an issue all the time or just with exams? If it is just exams I agree with the xanax. If it is all the time it may be vsginismus and you may want to make an appointment with your gynecologist to deal with that before a pelvic.

I had vaginismus, Dr. Muangman (RHJN practice) prescribed xanax for my exams. It worked well, my muscles would relax enough for the exam and although my brain was telling my I "should" be anxious, my body felt calm. Just have someone else drive you to the appt.

It might not be if OP has experienced some kind of sexual trauma.

I've never experienced sexual trauma of any kind, my mind and heart are ok with the idea of an exam, my body says "no" for some reason.

I'm PP and I'm glad to hear your issue isn't related to anything traumatic. My main point was that it isn't necessarily overkill to request sedation depending on the situation.

I was in your shoes, no history of sexual trauma or abuse of any kind. It was still vaginismus. I used the program, the books + "dilators", which are really just graduated dildos on Vaginismus.com. I used it about 12 years ago to prepare for my first pelvic exam. Prior to that, the I wasn't even able to insert a Q-Tip. I tried to get a pelvic exam before that and it went poorly, to say the least.

Xanax or Ativan won't help you if you have a severe case of v.

Why is it overkill for a routine pelvic exam, but not overkill for a dental cleaning? I'm not trying to be argumentative, but since sedation dentistry has taken off I've wondered this.
