How to make my dog like his jacket?

Anonymous
I have a small dog. When I first got him last winter, he happily wore his sweater, etc. outdoors. Got him a new coat in his size for this year and he HATES it-either tries to get it off or just won't move and looks miserable. Any advice?

Serious question: why does your dog need to wear his jacket? Doesn't he have fur? Maybe you should just let him be. If he is cold then let him decide if he wants to wear it or not.

I don't know why dog owners think their dogs need to wear a jacket, especially when it is barely warm enough for humans to be in long sleeves.

Dogs have fur. You know, fur. What we humans used to use for the warmest possible coats during prairie blizzard weather.

Have you worn a fur coat before OP?

I have worn my great grandma's old fur coats. Even with the lightest autumn fur coat, the last thing you would want to put over a fur coat is a knit sweater.

Why should a dog be any different? Did you ever stop to think that perhaps, just maybe, nature knows better than us and gave our dogs just exactly what they need to be comfortable, a fur coat that thickens for cold weather and sheds for warm weather?

It is not even a little bit cold outside. Your poor dog is trying to tell you something. Listen to her and quit trying to make her a fashion accessory.

Forget about the jacket. Dogs have fur.

He's just getting over all the humiliation and embarrassment in front of his doggie friends from last year, and here you come with a new coat? Please, let you dog have his dignity!

Until it's in the thirties forget about it.

Well, I suppose that first you have to convince your very smart dog that dogs in coats isn't a completely ridiculous look. Good luck with that. Your dog has fur, it isn't a baby who needs booties and a hat.

I used to have a big, hairy dog and I thought dog coats were stupid. Now I have a 10 pound short haired little thing and she gets very cold when the temps are in the 40s or lower. It's so cold that she instantly shivers when she steps outside. I got her a little sweatshirt that goes on over her head. She did not like those quilted coats that strap around her body. I think they feel too restrictive to her.

Sounds like a terrible pet choice for a cold environment.

Ignore the haters. They don't understand that tiny dogs do not keep in their heat very well, even with fur. If the dog likes his sweater, why not stick with that or something with a similar feel.

Why are you putting a jacket on your dog? Dogs have fur. They have built in coats.

My dog is bald on her stomach. She won't go out on a cold day without some sort of covering.

Get her a stomach toupee
